Chapter 4 - A House Divided

The heavy rain outside lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows of the main foyer like buckshot. Sirens wailed in the distance, cutting through the dark Chicago night as multiple black-and-white squad cars, accompanied by unmarked federal SUVs, converged on the courtyard of the Rossi estate.
I stood at the top of the grand staircase, looking down through the iron-railed balcony. The heavy oak front doors were already battered open, and federal agents in tactical gear swarmed the marble lobby, shouting orders and securing every exit.
At the center of it all stood Special Agent Marcus Vance—a ruthless federal prosecutor who had spent the last five years trying to nail the Rossi family to the wall. Beside him, looking pale and shaken in a heavy wool coat, was my mother’s personal lawyer, holding a signed affidavit that detailed every dark secret of the estate, including the exact architectural blueprints of the hidden basement room.
My mother had sold us all out. To save her own throne, she had burned the entire kingdom to the ground.
“Dante Rossi!” Agent Vance’s voice echoed up the grand staircase, amplified by a megaphone. “Put your hands where we can see them! You are surrounded!”
From the master bedroom behind me, the door clicked open. Grace stepped out, wrapped in a warm cashmere robe, her face still pale but her eyes burning with fierce, unyielding resolve. In her arms, wrapped in a soft blue blanket, our son was sleeping soundly, completely oblivious to the war raging around him.
“Dante,” Grace whispered, stepping up to my side and gripping my arm with her fingers. “They’re clearing the lower levels. They found the nursery... they found everything.”
“I know, Tesoro,” I murmured, keeping my body positioned defensively in front of her and the baby. “Listen to me. Viktor has the back tunnel prepped. It leads out to the boathouse on the lake. I need you to take our son and go.”
“And leave you here?” Her eyes widened in panic. “Dante, no! If you stay, they’ll lock you away for the rest of your life! Your mother gave them everything!”
“If I go with you right now, we’ll never be free,” I replied, turning to look into her eyes, my hands framing her face just as I had promised in the dark. “My mother thinks she’s won. She thinks by destroying the empire, she inherits the ashes. But she forgot one fundamental rule of the Rossi bloodline.”
Before Grace could argue further, Viktor appeared at the end of the second-floor hallway, nodding grimly. “The tunnel is clear, Mrs. Rossi. I’ve got a car waiting on the other side of the ridge. I will protect them with my life.”
Grace hesitated, a tear slipping down her cheek, before pressing her forehead against mine. “Find us, Dante. No matter what it takes.”
“I will find you,” I promised, kissing her lips one last time. “Go.”
As Viktor led Grace swiftly down the private service stairwell, I turned around and walked slowly down the grand marble staircase toward the swarm of federal agents waiting below.
Agent Vance stood at the foot of the stairs, a smug smile plastered across his face as he snapped open a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.
“Well, Dante,” Vance sneered as I reached the bottom step. “It looks like the mighty Rossi empire has finally fallen. Where’s your mother? And where’s your missing wife?”

I didn't flinch. I held out my wrists, letting the cold steel snap into place with a heavy click.
“My wife and my son are safe,” I said quietly, my voice carrying a terrifying, unnatural calm that made Vance’s smile falter. “As for my mother... she’s waiting in the basement. And I suggest you go down there right now, Agent Vance. Because she has a lot of stories to tell about the people who helped her build this cage.”
