Chapter 3 - The Traitor Within

The interrogation room in the basement of the Rossi estate was designed for men who had broken omertà, men who sold out our shipping routes to rival syndicates, men who had nothing left to lose. Tonight, its cold concrete walls echoed with something far more dangerous: a son tearing down the legacy of his own flesh and blood.
Elena sat calmly in a heavy steel chair, her hands cuffed loosely to the bolted table. She refused to look broken. Her spine remained rigid, her chin tilted up with the arrogant pride of a woman who believed her blood shield would protect her from the ultimate consequence.
“You can lock me in chains all you want, Dante,” she said smoothly, her voice bouncing off the damp walls. “It doesn't change the board. While you’ve been wasting weeks obsessing over a frightened girl, the Milano syndicate has been quietly buying up the shipping docks on the South Side. Your captains are growing restless. They see you distracted, weak, nursing a newborn like a domestic clerk instead of ruling a syndicate.”
I stood across from her, leaning my palms against the cold metal table, my shadow eclipsing her entirely.
“Let’s talk about the South Side docks, Mother,” I said quietly, pulling a thick manila folder from beneath my arm and tossing it onto the table.
Elena’s eyes flicked down to the folder, for the first time showing a micro-expression of genuine surprise.
“What is that?” she asked, her voice dropping a fraction of its composure.
“That is the audit trail of every wire transfer made from the Rossi family offshore accounts over the last eight months,” I replied, my voice dangerously calm. “Funny thing about wire transfers, Mother. No matter how clean you think you scrub them through shell companies in the Cayman Islands, the signatures always lead back to an authorized trustee.”
I flipped the folder open, pointing a finger at a highlighted signature at the bottom of the page.
Elena Rossi.
“You didn't just lock Grace away to protect the family,” I whispered, the crushing weight of the truth finally settling over me. “You made a deal with the Milanos. You promised them our South Side shipping lanes in exchange for backing your bid to push me out of the syndicate leadership. You wanted me out of the picture, permanently tied down with a scandal or a tragedy, so you could resume total control.”
Elena’s face hardened into a mask of pure ice. The facade of the protective, misguided matriarch shattered completely, revealing the ruthless tactician beneath.
“And if I did?” she snapped, her voice suddenly sharp and venomous. “You were becoming soft, Dante! You wanted to legitimize our holdings, cut ties with our oldest allies, and play domestic house with a girl who didn't even know how to load a pistol! The Rossi syndicate was built on blood and iron, not domestic bliss. I gave you your life, and I have every right to take back the crown when you prove unworthy of wearing it.”
Before I could answer, the heavy steel door of the interrogation room banged open.
Viktor stood in the doorway, his face pale, breathing heavily as if he had run up twenty flights of stairs.
“Boss,” Viktor rasped, his eyes darting anxiously between me and Elena. “We have a breach. The East Side perimeter guards just radioed in. A convoy of black SUVs is bypassing our security checkpoints. They’re moving straight up the main drive.”
“Whose men?” I demanded, straightening instantly.
“Not the Milanos,” Viktor said, his voice dropping to a grim whisper. “It’s the federal task organized by Special Agent Vance. And they’ve got a federal search warrant for the estate... signed by a judge who somehow already knew about the hidden room in the west wing.”

Elena let out a sharp, triumphant laugh from her chair.
“Did you really think I didn't have a backup plan, my son?” she smiled, her eyes gleaming with manic satisfaction. “The moment you locked me down here, the automated distress signal went off to federal authorities. By sunrise, the world will know about the underground prison, the captive wife, and the illegal syndicate operations running right beneath your feet. Your empire is gone, Dante. And the only way out is through me.”
