Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of Marchetti Holdings

By sunrise on Tuesday, the financial columns of the Chicago Tribune and Crain’s Chicago Business had stopped talking about the wedding scandal and started panicking over the stock market.
Marchetti Holdings—Daniel’s family real estate empire—woke up to a coordinated, multi-pronged financial assault that defied explanation.
In the sleek executive suite on the thirty-second floor of the Marchetti Building, Daniel was screaming so loudly his voice cracked.
“What do you mean the municipal zoning board revoked our permits?” Daniel roared, slamming his fist onto his mahogany desk so hard the coffee mugs jumped.
His lead project manager, a sweaty middle-aged man named Henderson, clutched a leather folder to his chest like a shield. “Mr. Marchetti, I don't know! Word came down from the mayor’s office at five this morning. They said an anonymous compliance audit filed late last night flagged severe discrepancies in the environmental soil reports on the West Loop site. They’ve slapped a complete stop-work order on the entire block!”
Daniel’s face drained of all color. The West Loop project was a hundred-million-dollar development backed by three institutional lenders who had strict completion clauses. If construction stopped for even thirty days, the default penalties would bankrupt the firm.
“Who filed the audit?” Daniel snarled, grabbing Henderson by the lapels of his suit. “Find out who signed off on it!”
“We tried, sir,” Henderson squeaked, terrified. “The digital signature was encrypted through a private server routing protocol registered out of... out of Viscari Trust Holdings.”
Daniel froze. The color vanished entirely from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse in a tailored suit.
Viscari.
Before Daniel could process the sheer, terrifying magnitude of what was happening, the heavy oak doors of his private office burst open without a knock.
Camille rushed in, her hair disheveled, her designer handbag clutched in her hands like a weapon, tears streaming down her carefully made-up face.
“Daniel! Have you seen the news?” Camille shrieked, shoving her phone into his face.
The screen displayed a breaking financial alert: Viscari Global Announces Major Acquisition of Subordinated Debt and Commercial Mortgages Tied to Marchetti Holdings.
“They’re buying up our debt, Daniel!” Camille cried, panic cracking her voice. “My father tried to call our main commercial lender this morning to secure an emergency bridge loan, and the bank manager told him—told him to his face—that the Viscari syndicate had already purchased our entire credit line at a premium!”
Daniel staggered backward, his knees hitting the edge of his leather desk as the walls of the world he had built began to cave in around him.
It wasn't just a business rivalry. It was a calculated, surgical execution.
And as Daniel stared blankly at the glass wall overlooking the Chicago River, he realized with sickening clarity that he had invited his own executioner into the ballroom on Saturday night when he allowed Vanessa to mock the girl in the emerald dress.
Across town, seated in the glass-walled home office of the Viscari penthouse, Isabella Cruz watched the Marchetti stock ticker plummet on a multi-monitor display with absolute, serene calm.
Her phone chimed on the mahogany desk.
It was a text message from an unknown number, but she didn't need caller ID to know who sent it.
“Please, Isabella,” the message read, frantic and broken. “Call off your dogs. Let’s talk. Name your price.”

Isabella picked up her phone, typed three simple words, and hit send before blocking the number forever.
“I’m just getting started.”
