Chapter 2 - The Crimson LedgerThe private study on the third floor of the Ashford mansion was a fortress of dark mahogany, leather-bound books, and old power. A massive stone fireplace crackled against the chill of the Manhattan night, casting long, writhing shadows across the Persian carpets.

I stood by the window, peering through the heavy velvet drapes down into the cobblestone courtyard where black sedans idled under the glare of security lights.
The door clicked open.
Daniel walked in, shedding his suit jacket and tossing it carelessly over the back of a leather armchair. He rolled up his shirtsleeves, revealing forearms corded with muscle and faint, jagged scars—the physical proof of a life lived in the crossfire of the New York underworld.
He didn't speak right away. He walked over to a crystal decanter, poured two fingers of amber bourbon, and took a slow, deliberate sip before turning his dark gaze toward me.
"You're Vincent Marchetti's daughter," Daniel said quietly.
It wasn't a question. It was a statement of absolute, unshakeable fact.
I stiffened, turning away from the window to face him. I squared my shoulders, letting the false persona of Emily McBride drop away entirely. "How long did you know?"
"From the moment you submitted your resume," Daniel replied, a faint, humorless smirk touching the corners of his lips. "European taste? Excellent discretion? Please. Your father uses the same forgery service for all his intelligence assets. I kept you around because I wanted to know what Vincent was planning. I didn't expect his daughter to jump in front of a poisoned glass of champagne to save my life."
"I didn't do it for you," I lied sharply, though my voice betrayed a slight tremor. "My father wants you alive—until he is ready to take your territory. If some rival syndicate like the Porters poisoned you at your own engagement party, my father's plans would have been ruined."
Daniel took another step closer, his eyes narrowing. He moved with that terrifying, predatory grace that had made him the most feared man in the city. "A clever lie. Almost believable. But if you only cared about your father's timeline, you would have let Katherine kill me and blamed it on the wedding chaos. Instead, you risked everything to stop it."
He closed the distance between us until he was standing just inches away. The scent of cedar, expensive bourbon, and ozone washed over me, making it difficult to draw a steady breath.
"Why, Emily?" he murmured, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic register. "Why save a monster?"
"You're arrogant," I snapped, trying to mask my rising panic behind a wall of defiance. "And you're a criminal. But you run your syndicate with a code. If Katherine and her father had taken over through poison, New York would have plunged into a bloodbath that would have killed hundreds of innocents. My father’s war is about business. The Porters' war is about slaughter."
Daniel stared at me for a long, agonizing moment. The air between us grew thick, charged with an unspoken tension that had nothing to do with mafia politics and everything to do with the magnetic pull drawing us together.
"My intelligence reports say Vincent Marchetti treats his people like disposable chess pieces," Daniel said softly, his hand reaching out. His knuckles gently brushed against my cheek, tracing the line of my jawline with a tenderness that completely contradicted his reputation. "He sent you into the lion's den alone. Did he even care if you survived?"
The blunt honesty of the question struck a raw nerve. My father hadn't cared. To Vincent Marchetti, I was just another asset to be spent.
Before I could answer, a frantic, violent pounding echoed against the heavy oak door of the study.
Daniel’s hand dropped from my face instantly, the softness vanishing from his eyes, replaced once again by the cold, ruthless mask of a crime lord.
"Enter," he commanded.

The door burst open, and Victor stumbled inside, his face pale and slick with sweat.
"Boss," Victor gasped, struggling to catch his breath. "We interrogated Katherine in the basement holding room. She didn't work alone. Her father, Arthur Porter, just mobilized a tactical strike team. They're hitting the mansion's perimeter right now. They aren't trying to negotiate anymore, Boss—they're coming to burn the entire estate to the ground."
