Chapter 7 - The Crown ReclaimedSix months later.

Spring had arrived in Chicago. Lake Michigan sparkled beneath a clear, brilliant blue sky, and the city’s skyline gleamed in the afternoon sunlight.
At the center of the financial district, a massive ceremony was taking place outside the newly renovated corporate headquarters. The silver letters that had once read Sterling Enterprises had been completely removed, replaced by towering, polished bronze typography:
CROSS-MARITIME LOGISTICS
Hundreds of news cameras, reporters, employees, and city officials gathered in the courtyard.
Standing on the raised stage was my grandfather, Arthur Cross Sr., looking healthier and happier than he had in a decade, standing beside my sister, my attorneys, and the entire board of directors.
I stood at the podium, wearing a tailored cream-colored suit, a genuine, radiating smile on my face as the applause echoed through the plaza.
“Seven years ago, this company was taken from my family in the dark,” I addressed the crowd, my voice ringing out clear and proud across the plaza. “Today, we bring it back into the light. Cross-Maritime Logistics is no longer a symbol of corporate greed or deceit. It is a symbol of justice, integrity, and resilience.”
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause.
As the ribbon-cutting ceremony concluded, guests flooded into the glass atrium for the celebratory reception.
I stepped away from the crowd, walking out onto the private terrace overlooking the lake—the very same terrace where, three years ago, I had stood in a blue housekeeping uniform, mopping the floor while Miranda Sterling laughed at me.
Miranda was currently serving an eight-year sentence in a federal prison for corporate conspiracy and tax fraud, while Victor Vance and Thomas Sterling faced life sentences.
“Thinking about the past?” a warm, familiar voice asked behind me.
I turned around.
Julian stood there, dressed in a sleek suit, holding two glasses of sparkling apple cider. Over the past six months, Julian had worked tirelessly as the Chief Operating Officer of Cross-Maritime, earning the respect of my grandfather, the board, and every employee in the company.
“I was just thinking about how far we’ve come,” I said, taking a glass from him.
“You came a long way, Valerie,” Julian said softly, looking at me with dark eyes filled with admiration and something far deeper. “You rebuilt an empire from the ashes.”
“We did it together, Julian,” I corrected him, stepping closer to him. “I couldn't have done it without you.”
Julian smiled, reaching out to gently tuck a strand of dark hair behind my ear. His touch was warm, sending a pleasant shiver through my heart.
“So, Miss CEO,” Julian murmured, his face inches from mine, “what’s your next command?”
I looked up into his eyes, the memory of pain, betrayal, and struggle completely fading away, replaced by the bright, endless future stretching out before us.
“My next command,” I whispered, leaning in until my lips brushed against his, “is for you to kiss me.”
Julian didn't hesitate. He pulled me into his arms, wrapping his hands around my waist, kissing me deeply as the afternoon sun cast a warm, golden glow over the city we had reclaimed together.
