Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Queen of Fifth AvenueVictoria stopped dead in her tracks, her expensive fur coat sweeping the foyer floor as she stared at me. The triumphant smirk she had worn a second earlier flickered and died, replaced by a sudden, creeping unease.

“What... what is that in your hand?” Victoria demanded, her voice losing a fraction of its booming volume. She gestured toward the burly man behind her, whose name tag on his canvas jacket read Marcus. “Marcus, grab her phone. Get it out of her hand right now!”
Marcus took a heavy step forward, his thick shoulders bunching up as he reached out a meaty hand toward my wrist.
I didn't move an inch. I didn't scream, and I didn't back away. I simply tapped the surface of my phone screen twice, bringing up a live video feed from my home security system that was currently streaming to my cloud storage.
“Before you touch me, Marcus,” I said, my voice carrying a quiet, lethal calm that made even the thug hesitate, “you might want to check your phone. Or better yet, ask Victoria who’s currently parked downstairs in front of my building.”
Victoria’s face went chalk-white. “What are you talking about?”
Almost on cue, a chorus of sharp, wailing sirens pierced the quiet morning air outside. The sound grew rapidly louder, multiplied by three distinct vehicles, until the flashing red and blue lights of unmarked federal SUVs and local police cruisers bounced violently off my floor-to-ceiling living room windows.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Heavy combat boots hit the hallway carpet outside my apartment door before Marcus could even turn around.
“FBI! Federal law enforcement! Nobody move!”
The command was barked with absolute, terrifying authority. Before Victoria or her hired muscle could react, three armed federal agents in tactical vests swarmed through the broken doorway, weapons lowered but instantly securing the perimeter. One of them immediately pinned Marcus against the hallway wall, snapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists with practiced speed.
“Marcus!” Victoria shrieked, clutching her chest as if she were having a heart attack. “Do something! Shoot them! I am Victoria Whitmore! My son is Richard Whitmore! We own half of this city!”
“Victoria Whitmore?” the lead agent asked, stepping forward with a leather folder in his hand. He glanced down at a printed sheet, then looked up at her with cold indifference. “Victoria Whitmore, you are being detained for questioning regarding your complicity in interstate wire fraud, money laundering, and receipt of stolen corporate assets exceeding four million dollars.”
Victoria staggered backward, her manicured hands flying to her mouth. “Fraud? Money laundering? You’re insane! This is a mistake! My son is a billionaire developer! He’ll have your badges before noon!”
“Your son,” I said, stepping past her toward the kitchen counter to pick up my coffee mug, “is currently sitting in a federal holding cell in Lower Manhattan. They picked him up twenty minutes ago when the preliminary wire-tap warrants were executed.”
Victoria froze, her eyes dilating with raw horror. “You... you did this.”
“I didn't do anything,” I replied smoothly, taking a sip of my coffee. “I just stopped paying your bills. What happened after that—well, that’s between you, your son, and the federal grand jury.”
The agent walked over to me, nodding respectfully. “Ms. Sophia Vance?”
“Yes,” I answered.
“We received your transmission. The automated data dump contains financial trails that match our offshore investigation perfectly. We’ll need your formal statement at the federal building downtown, but your apartment is secure now.”

“Thank you, Agent Miller,” I said, sliding the silver flash drive across the marble counter into his waiting hand. “Everything you need to trace the shell companies is right here. Every forged signature, every fraudulent tax write-off, and every receipt for Victoria’s shopping sprees.”
Victoria let out a strangled, pathetic cry of pure panic, collapsing into a heap against my ruined entryway wall as the agents escorted her out in handcuffs, leaving her designer fur coat dragging in the dust of her own destruction.
