Chapter 2 - The Audit and the Inheritance TrapI motioned for Marcus to follow me into my private study while Victoria and Ryan paced frantically in the foyer like caged animals, their shouting muffled by the heavy soundproofed doors.

I settled behind my mahogany desk, taking a slow sip of water. “Talk to me, Marcus. What did the audit find?”

Marcus pulled a thick manila folder from his briefcase and slid it across the glass surface. “When Ryan filed for divorce three months ago, his legal team submitted a financial disclosure claiming his personal net worth was under two million dollars, mostly tied up in illiquid real estate and standard equity. They argued for a substantial alimony payout from your personal corporate earnings.”

“Standard playbook,” I murmured, flipping open the folder. “They wanted to bleed me dry while keeping their own assets shielded.”

“Exactly,” Marcus nodded, tapping a finger on a highlighted bank ledger. “Except they made a fatal mistake. When you canceled Victoria’s credit card this morning, it triggered an automated security protocol linked to the primary holding account—an account that Ryan and Victoria claimed belonged entirely to the Sterling family estate.”

My eyes scanned the document, and a slow, chilling realization washed over me. “This account... it’s not theirs.”

“No,” Marcus said, a grim smile touching the corners of his mouth. “It’s a subsidiary account of Bellamy Holdings, which was quietly funneled through three shell companies to bail out Ryan’s failing startup back in 2021. And guess whose digital signature authorized every single one of those backdoor transfers?”

I looked up, meeting his eyes. “Victoria.”

“Not just Victoria,” Marcus corrected. “Victoria and late grandfather Sterling, whose estate was probated five years ago. They didn't just borrow money from your corporate holdings, Sophia. To keep their high-society lifestyle afloat while their real estate ventures collapsed, they systematically embezzled nearly twelve million dollars from your family’s foundational trust—falsifying investment returns and hiding the paper trail behind fake corporate invoices.”

Outside the study doors, a sudden, violent crash echoed through the apartment, followed by the sound of glass shattering against the hardwood floor.

“You useless, incompetent boy!” Victoria’s voice screamed from the hallway. “If you hadn't signed those papers without reading them, we wouldn't be in this position!”

“Shut up, Mom! How was I supposed to know she’d actually notice?!” Ryan roared back.

I stood up slowly, smoothing the fabric of my silk robe. The fear and exhaustion I had felt yesterday morning had completely evaporated, replaced by a cold, surgical clarity. They hadn't just underestimated me as a wife. They had committed grand larceny, believing my quiet demeanor meant I was too weak to ever look beneath the surface.

“Marcus,” I said softly, walking toward the study door. “Call the precinct. Tell Inspector Vance we have new evidence regarding a multi-million-dollar corporate fraud scheme.”

“Wait, Sophia,” Marcus cautioned, holding up a hand. “If we go the criminal route right now, they’ll scream victimhood and try to drag your name through the tabloids to pressure a settlement.”

“Let them scream,” I replied, unlocking the heavy door and pulling it wide open. “Let’s see how loud they scream when they realize the door to my world is permanently locked.”
