Chapter 5 - The Betrayal Within the Inner CircleThe high of the gala was shattered three nights later by the shrill, persistent ringing of the private security console in Cade’s study.

It was 3:15 a.m.
Nora woke up to the sound of raised voices echoing up the grand staircase. Not shouting—controlled, lethal, whispered fury.
She threw on a silk robe, slipped out of her bedroom, and crept quietly down the hallway toward Cade’s study. The heavy oak door was cracked open a few inches. A strip of amber light spilled across the Persian rug.
"I don't give a damn about your loyalty, Mateo!" Cade’s voice roared—not loud, but vibrating with a terrifying, coiled violence Nora had never heard before. "You leaked the shipping manifests to Vance’s office! You sold us out!"
Nora froze, her hand hovering over the door handle.
Mateo’s voice—usually calm and respectful—sounded strained and panicked. "Boss, you don't understand! My daughter... they had her at St. Jude’s hospital. They threatened her life if I didn't hand over the secondary ledger! I had no choice!"
"You always have a choice," Cade growled. The sound of a heavy fist slamming against solid mahogany echoed through the room. "You come to me. You tell me your family is in danger. You do not compromise the safety of everyone under this roof—including my wife."
"Boss..."
"Get out," Cade commanded, his voice dropping into a register of absolute, final doom. "Take your things, take your family, and leave the state by sunrise. If I ever see your face in Illinois again, there won't be enough of you left to bury."
A heavy silence followed, broken only by the sound of hurried footsteps moving toward the back service stairs.
Nora’s chest rose and fell in ragged breaths. The mafia world Cade inhabited wasn't a corporate boardroom game—it was a battlefield of blood, extortion, and life-or-death loyalties.
Suddenly, the study door swung wide open.
Cade stood in the doorway, his shirtsleeves rolled up, his knuckles bruised and bleeding slightly against the white cuff. He stopped dead when he saw Nora standing in the hallway, barefoot and trembling in her silk robe.
"How much did you hear?" he asked, his voice raw.
"Enough," Nora whispered. She took a step toward him, ignoring the warning sirens screaming in her head. "Cade... your own head of security. They threatened his daughter. This isn't just a corporate audit. This is a war."
"It's my war," Cade said harshly, turning his back to her and walking toward his mahogany desk, pouring a finger of amber whiskey into a crystal glass. "Which is why you shouldn't have been listening. This is why I told you this world was dirty, Nora."
"I'm not a delicate flower you can lock in a glass tower, Cade!" Nora snapped, closing the distance between them and grabbing the edge of his desk. "I married you. For better or for worse—even if it started as a contract!"
Cade turned slowly, his dark eyes burning with an intensity that took her breath away. He set the glass down so hard the crystal cracked.
"Don't say that."
"Why not? It's true!"
"Because every day you stay in this house, every day you wear that ring and play my wife, you paint a bigger target on your back!" Cade shouted, stepping close—so close she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. "Mateo betrayed me. Vance is closing in. If they realize how much you actually mean to me—if they realize you aren't just a convenient legal shield—they will use you to destroy me!"
The silence in the study became deafening.
Nora stared up at him, her breath hitching as her brain tried to process his words.
"If they realize how much you actually mean to me..."
"What did you say?" Nora whispered, her voice barely audible.
Cade stared down at her, realizing too late what had slipped past his defenses. His jaw clenched. He reached out, his large, scarred hand gently cupping the side of her face, his thumb tracing her cheekbone with a tenderness that contradicted every violent threat he had ever uttered.
"I said," Cade murmured, his voice dropping into a husky, broken whisper, "that you are the only real thing in a life built on shadows, Nora. And I am terrified that I dragged you down into the dark with me."

Before Nora could answer, before she could process the seismic shift in their relationship, the security alarm system throughout the entire mansion shrieked to life with a deafening, red-flashing wail.
Warning: Perimeter breach. Sector four.
