Chapter 6 - The Shadows Closing InThree days after the charity gala, the fallout reached its violent climax.

The public spectacle at the hotel had destroyed Prosecutor Vance’s political narrative; unable to find any legal footing for marital fraud, the Justice Department quietly moved to close the preliminary inquiry into Moreno Hospitality due to lack of evidence. Cade’s corporate empire was secure.
But in the underworld, weakness was measured by exposure. And Cade’s public declaration of love for Nora had painted a massive target on her back.
It was 11:00 PM on a Friday. Cade was still locked in his downtown office dealing with the final restructuring of the corporate trust, leaving Nora and Maya safely inside the Lincoln Park estate under the watch of Carla and four armed security guards.
Nora was in the second-floor library reading a bedtime story to Maya when the power suddenly cut out.
The sprawling mansion plunged into absolute darkness, save for the emergency backup lights that flickered a dull, sickly amber along the baseboards.
Maya gasped, grabbing the hem of Nora’s shirt. "Nora? What's happening? Is there a storm?"
"No, sweetie," Nora said, her ER nurse instincts instantly overriding her fear. Her heart pounded, but her voice remained steady. "Stay right here under the heavy oak desk. Do not move, no matter what you hear. Do you understand?"
"Nora, I'm scared—"
"Look at me, Maya. I am going to keep you safe. Just like Cade promised."
Nora bolted to the heavy oak doors, locking them securely from the inside. As she turned around, the sound of shattered glass echoed from the ground floor beneath the east wing.
Intruders.
Rival syndicate enforcers, desperate to strike at Cade through his greatest vulnerability, had breached the perimeter.
Nora didn't hesitate. She grabbed a heavy bronze fireplace poker from the hearth, her breathing shallow and fast. She slipped out a side service door into the darkened hallway, moving silently toward the security panic room control panel hidden behind the wainscoting.
Before she could reach it, a heavy hand grabbed her shoulder from behind, spinning her around.
A masked man in tactical black gear shoved her against the wall, a silenced pistol raised in his fist. "Where's the kid?" the man hissed through a synthetic balaclava. "Where's Moreno's weak spot?"
Nora didn't scream. Instead, using every ounce of adrenaline-fueled fury she possessed, she brought the heavy bronze poker down in a crushing arc across the man's knee.
He roared in pain, dropping his weapon as he crumpled to the floor.
Before he could recover, the hallway lights flickered back on with a deafening surge of electricity. Heavy footsteps thundered up the grand staircase.
Julian, leading a team of Moreno security guards, swarmed the corridor, subduing the remaining intruders in a blur of disciplined, ruthless efficiency. But before Julian could secure the hallway, the front heavy doors downstairs blew open.
Cade Moreno strode into the foyer.
He had discarded his suit jacket, his sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his face a mask of absolute, apocalyptic fury. He had received the security alert downtown and had driven like a madman through the city streets.
When Cade reached the second-floor landing and saw Nora standing over a downed intruder with a blood-stained bronze poker, his dark eyes dilated with sheer terror.
"Nora!"
He crossed the hallway in two strides, pulling her violently into his arms, crushing her against his chest as if checking to make sure she was still real.
"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his voice shaking with a raw panic Nora had never heard before. "Did they touch you?"
"I'm fine," Nora breathed, her own arms wrapping tightly around his waist as the adrenaline finally began to crash, leaving her trembling. "Maya is safe. She's locked in the library."
Cade buried his face in her auburn hair, holding her so tightly she could feel the frantic beating of his heart. "I told you no one touches what is mine," he whispered fiercely, his voice vibrating with suppressed rage. "This is over. Tonight, every single rat who ordered this hit goes into the ground."
Julian stepped up respectfully, keeping his eyes on the floor. "Boss. The perimeter is secure. The remaining men are captured. What do you want us to do with them?"
Cade pulled back slightly, looking down into Nora’s eyes. The darkness in his expression was profound, but when he looked at her, it softened into something infinite.

"Hand them over to federal authorities with a complete dossier of their payroll records," Cade commanded coldly. "Let the law finish what we started."
He turned back to Nora, lifting her chin with his hand. "Come on," he whispered. "Let's go get our daughter."
