Chapter 6 - The Shadows of the EmpireWith Whitaker & Sons dismantled and absorbed into the Vanguard portfolio, the Chicago business elite finally understood the gravity of the alliance that had formed at the Astor House gala.

The whispers about Clara being a sudden, accidental fixture in Julian’s life quickly died down. In their place grew a deep, respectful awe. Clara didn't just sit in the penthouse playing the role of a trophy billionaire wife; she took over the architectural oversight of Vanguard’s entire commercial division, turning brutal, cold skyscrapers into masterpieces of light, space, and human dignity.

And Julian was never more dangerous—or more fiercely devoted—than when someone looked twice at his wife.

On a warm Friday evening in July, two months after their impromptu wedding, Julian hosted a private gala on the very same terrace at the Astor House where their lives had collided.

This time, Clara wasn't hiding behind a pillar.

She stood at the center of the grand ballroom wearing a stunning, backless emerald-silk gown that hugged her full hips and celebrated every single curve of her body. Her dark hair was swept up with a diamond pin, and the heavy sapphire necklace Julian had gifted her rested against her collarbone.

Across the room, powerful CEOs, politicians, and real estate moguls watched her with a mixture of envy and absolute reverence.

Julian walked up behind her, sliding his arms around her waist, pulling her back against his chest as the string quartet played a low, romantic waltz.

“You’re stealing the spotlight from my entire portfolio,” Julian murmured against her ear, his breath warm against her skin.

“Good,” Clara smiled, leaning back into his embrace, feeling the solid, unyielding strength of him. “It’s about time your portfolio learned to share.”

Julian chuckled, turning her slightly so she could look into his eyes. The fierce, terrifying predator who terrified the Chicago underworld was gone, replaced by a man whose entire soul was anchored to the woman in his arms.

“Do you ever regret it?” Julian asked softly, his thumb tracing the line of her cheekbone. “The chaos, the speed, the world I dragged you into?”

Clara reached up, placing her hand over his heart, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm beneath his shirt.

“You didn't drag me into a world, Julian,” she whispered, her eyes shining with absolute certainty. “You gave me back my own.”

Julian smiled—a rare, brilliant smile reserved only for her—and lowered his lips to hers, sealing a promise that no board room, no enemy, and no ghost from the past could ever break.
