Chapter 2 - The Interrogation of CowardsThe living room of our small apartment had transformed into a courtroom of shadows.

The dining table, once cluttered with unpaid bills and the single rotten apple Ryan had tossed me that morning, now held Antonio’s heavy leather briefcase. The four enforcers stood guard at the windows and the front door, their bulky frames blocking any hope of escape.

Ryan and Linda sat rigidly side by side on the small fabric sofa, sweating profusely under the piercing gaze of my father.

Vincent sat across from them in an armchair, slowly turning a heavy silver signet ring around his finger—a habit from his old days when a single flick of that ring meant a sentence had been passed.

"Let's talk about finances," Vincent said casually, breaking the suffocating silence. He tilted his head toward Antonio. "What did the preliminary offshore audit show?"

Antonio opened a file folder. "Ryan Henderson hasn't earned a legitimate dollar in two years, Boss. He drained Emily’s personal savings account—forty-two thousand dollars she inherited from her mother—to fund his gambling debts and his downtown mistress. Furthermore, the apartment lease is actually in your name, Boss. Ryan defaulted on the rent three months ago; we've been paying it without your knowledge to keep her secure."

Ryan’s face drained of all remaining color. "That... that's a lie! We have a joint life, we're a family—"

"A family?" Vincent interrupted, his voice cutting through the room like a scalpel. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on his knees. "You locked my pregnant daughter in a bedroom. You bruised her ribs. You starved her. You forced her to watch videos of your infidelity on your tablet while she cried herself to sleep. And you called that a family?"

"She's crazy!" Linda shrieked, hysteria finally breaking through her composed veneer. "She didn't fit into our world! She was too weak, too sensitive! We were doing you a favor by breaking her spirit!"

Vincent didn't yell. He didn't slam his fist on the table. Instead, a chilling, humorless smile touched the corners of his lips.

"My daughter," Vincent said softly, "was a student of art history, a gentle soul who volunteered at animal shelters, and the light of my entire existence. You took a blooming flower and tried to crush it beneath your filthy boots."

He stood up slowly, towering over the cowering couple.

"Antonio, take Linda to the guest room. Confiscate her phone, her jewelry, and anything else tied to her identity. Keep her isolated until I decide whether she deserves a prison cell or something more permanent."

"No! You can't do that! This is kidnapping!" Linda screamed as two of the enforcers grabbed her arms, lifting her effortlessly from the sofa and dragging her down the hallway as her protests dissolved into muffled sobs.

Ryan tried to stand, his legs shaking violently beneath him. "Mr. Moretti... please. Let’s be reasonable. We can settle this in court, we can get a divorce lawyer, you’re a respected businessman now—"

"Respected?" Vincent chuckled darkly, stepping right up to Ryan’s face. The sheer aura of danger radiating from my father made Ryan shrink back until his spine pressed hard against the sofa cushions. "I left the life behind for Emily’s mother. When she died, Emily became my only anchor to this earth. You thought because I retired, I lost my teeth, Ryan?"

"I... I didn't know—"

"That's your primary mistake," Vincent whispered. "You assumed silence meant weakness. You assumed isolation meant abandonment."

Vincent turned away from him, walking down the hallway toward my bedroom. As he opened the door, the paramedics my father had quietly summoned finally arrived at the front door, escorted by Antonio.

"Get her to Chicago Memorial," Vincent instructed the medical team, his voice filled with urgent care. "Private wing. Top obstetrician in the city. If my grandchild has even a scratch, I will hold every single person in this building personally responsible."

As the medics lifted my stretcher, I caught one last glimpse of Ryan sitting alone in the living room, surrounded by shadows and men who held his fate in the palms of their hands.

My nightmare was finally over. But theirs was only just beginning.
