Chapter 1 - The Wrath of Vincent MorettiThe heavy, suffocating silence of the apartment was shattered by the slow, deliberate knocks echoing from the front door. Every beat of that rhythmic rapping sounded like a death knell for Ryan and his mother, Linda.

Vincent Moretti didn't flinch. He stood frozen beside my bed, his calloused hand still hovering inches above the blue blanket, his eyes locked onto the horrific canvas of my bruised and battered body. The dark handprint branding the skin beside my seven-month swollen belly seemed to sear itself directly into his retina.

For three decades, Vincent Moretti’s name had carried weight across the underworld of Chicago. He had retired from the syndicate years ago, trading custom Italian suits for quiet domesticity, folding baby clothes, and trying to become the grandfather he had always dreamed of being. But the predator didn’t die; he had merely gone to sleep. And now, the beast had been violently awakened.

"Open it," Vincent whispered. His voice wasn't raised in a roar; it was a low, chilling hiss that carried the absolute authority of a man who commanded life and death with a nod.

Ryan swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing violently. His polished facade of the charming, devoted husband had evaporated entirely, leaving behind a sweating, pathetic coward. He glanced toward the hallway, terrified of what—or rather, who—was waiting on the other side of that door.

"Mr... Mr. Moretti, please," Ryan stammered, taking a trembling step backward. "It’s a misunderstanding. Hormones... she tripped, she fell down the basement stairs last month, we were just trying to help her—"

"Shut your mouth," Vincent murmured. He didn't even turn his head to look at Ryan. His eyes remained fixed on me, filled with a heartbreaking, fractured sorrow that slowly, terrifyingly transformed into pure, unadulterated ice. "If you speak another word in my daughter’s home, you won't live to see the sun set."

Linda rushed forward, her hands wringing together in manic desperation. "Vincent! You can't listen to her! She’s unstable! Pregnancies do things to women’s minds, she hallucinates, she harms herself—"

Before Linda could finish her sentence, Vincent’s hand snapped out with the blinding speed of a striking viper. He didn't hit her; instead, his thick fingers clamped around the gold chain resting against her neck, yanking her forward until her face was inches from his.

"You watched her starve," Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You watched my little girl wither away in this cage while you played the domestic tyrant. Every single day you withheld water, every single meal you denied her, every single insult you spat at her... you signed your own death warrants."

He shoved Linda backward, sending her stumbling into the doorframe.

With measured, deliberate steps, Vincent walked out of the bedroom and pulled open the front door.

Standing in the hallway were four massive men in dark coats, their expressions carved from granite. At the front stood Antonio, Vincent’s most loyal enforcer from his old syndicate days, holding a leather briefcase.

"Boss," Antonio murmured, stepping over the threshold. "We secured the perimeter. No one enters or leaves. Shall we clean house?"

"Not yet, Antonio," Vincent replied softly, stepping back inside as the four heavy-set men filed into the living room, effectively sealing every exit. "First, we let these cockroaches realize there is nowhere left to run."

Ryan backed all the way into the kitchen counter, his eyes wide with panic as he realized the terrifying magnitude of what he had unleashed. He had thought me completely isolated, utterly defenseless, and entirely under his thumb. He never knew that behind my silence stood a fortress built on blood, loyalty, and absolute retribution.

Vincent turned back toward my bedroom, his hard expression softening instantly as he looked at me. He walked back to the bedside, knelt on the floor, and gently, reverently pulled the blanket back over my shivering body.

"You're safe now, Emily," he whispered, pressing a warm kiss to my forehead. "Daddy’s here. And nobody will ever hurt you again."
