Chapter 4 - The Panic Room ConfessionThe panic room was small, reinforced with thick layers of ballistic steel and concrete, completely soundproofed from the outside world. The emergency red backup light cast a faint, eerie glow across the shelves of emergency rations, medical supplies, and old cardboard archive boxes stacked neatly against the wall.

Outside, I could hear the muffled, frustrated thumps of Marcus pounding against the reinforced steel door, shouting obscenities and threatening to blow the hinges off with C4.

I slid down the concrete wall, pulling my knees up to my chest, my breath coming in ragged, trembling gasps. I had survived audits, angry mob bosses, and death threats, but staring down the barrel of Marcus’s gun had pushed my nervous system past its absolute breaking point.

For the first time since my parents died, for the first time since I took on the crushing responsibility of keeping my brother alive, I let myself cry. Silent, burning tears streamed down my face as I buried my head in my arms.

Click.

The sound of a secondary mechanical lock disengaging echoed from the back of the panic room.

I scrambled backward, my heart leaping into my throat, expecting Marcus to have found a secondary entrance.

Instead, a secret sliding panel in the back wall silently parted, and a flood of white light spilled into the room.

Standing in the hidden passageway, holding a submachine gun with his jacket discarded and his sleeves rolled up, was Dante Marino.

His eyes were wild, dark, and blazing with a terrifying intensity I had never seen before. The moment his gaze locked onto me—trembling, tear-stained, and cornered—the last remnants of his icy composure completely shattered.

"Emily," he breathed, dropping his weapon to the concrete floor with a heavy clatter and dropping to his knees in front of me.

Before I could say a word, Dante’s hands cupped my face, his thumbs gently wiping away the tears streaming down my cheeks. His touch was shockingly tender for a man whose hands had built an empire on blood and violence.

"Are you hurt?" he demanded, his voice thick with a raw, desperate panic that defied every myth about Chicago's most feared criminal. "Did he touch you? Tell me where he touched you, and I will tear this building down brick by brick."

"I'm... I'm okay," I choked out, my voice shaking uncontrollably. "Marcus... Marcus is the mole. He has the gun, he's outside the main door—"

"I know," Dante interrupted softly, resting his forehead against mine, his eyes closing as he let out a shuddering breath. "I monitored the system logs from my secure mobile terminal the second the lockdown triggered. I heard everything through the remote audio relay."

I stared into his eyes, the closeness between us suddenly overwhelming. I could feel the rapid beat of his heart against my chest as he pulled me into his arms, wrapping his strong, protective body around mine as if shielding me from the entire hostile world.

"Why didn't you stop him sooner?" I whispered against his shoulder.

"Because I needed to know for certain," Dante confessed, his voice heavy with self-loathing. "For fifteen years, Marcus was my shadow. Suspecting him felt like cutting off my own arm. But knowing he put you in danger... knowing he almost took you away from me..."

He paused, pulling back slightly to look directly into my eyes. The grey depths of his gaze burned with an emotion so fierce, so blindingly absolute, that it stole the breath right out of my lungs.

"When I heard him corner you in my office," Dante whispered, his voice cracking slightly, "I felt a terror I haven't felt since the day I lost Elena. And then I realized something terrifying, Emily. Elena has been dead for nine years. I spent a decade buried in the dark, waiting to die."

He reached up, his calloused thumb gently tracing my lower lip.

"And then you walked into my office with a folder, complained about the dry-cleaning bill for a Persian rug, and made me laugh. You brought a ghost back to life, Emily. And I will burn this entire city to the ash before I let anyone hurt you."

The air between us charged with an electric, undeniable current. All the barriers of employer and employee, boss and secretary, melted away in the dim red light of the panic room.

When Dante leaned in and pressed his lips softly against mine, it wasn't a tentative kiss. It was an explosion of suppressed longing, fierce passion, and two broken souls finally finding a safe harbor in the middle of a storm.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, kissing him back with every ounce of fear and adrenaline coursing through my veins, surrendering completely to the intoxicating pull of a man who had sworn to protect me with his life.
