Chapter 6 - The Trial of Gareth DixonSix months later, the high-ceilinged interior of Courtroom 3B at the County Courthouse felt like a fortress of absolute justice.

The public gallery was packed with journalists, Child Protective Services advocates, hospital personnel, and students from our high school who had gathered to watch the final sentencing hearing.

Gareth Dixon sat at the defense table wearing an oversized orange county jumpsuit. His hair was messy, his cheeks hollow, his arrogant posture completely shattered after six months of pre-trial detention without bail. Beside him sat my mother, wearing a faded gray dress, weeping silently into her hands, entirely ignored by her husband.

Sitting across the aisle at the prosecution table were ADA Catherine Mercer, Dr. Amelia Shaw, and Lydia and me.

Lydia and I wore matching tailored dark suits. Our injuries had fully healed, though a neat, surgical scar marked my right wrist where Dr. Shaw had arranged for a specialist to re-break and properly set the bone three months ago.

Judge Marcus Vance—a severe, white-haired jurist with forty years on the bench—slammed his heavy wooden gavel flat onto the block.

SLAM!

"We are here for the final sentencing in the matter of the State v. Gareth Dixon," Judge Vance declared, his thunderous voice echoing off the oak panels. "The defendant has been found guilty on all counts: two counts of Felony Child Abuse, two counts of Aggravated Domestic Battery, two counts of Illegal Surveillance of Minors, and one count of Witness Tampering."

Judge Vance looked over his glasses at Gareth, his eyes burning with a deep, unyielding disdain.

"In my forty years on the bench," Judge Vance spoke, every word dropped into the silent courtroom like a heavy iron weight, "I have rarely seen a human being demonstrate such calculated, remorseless cruelty toward children entrusted to his care. You used isolation, violence, and intimidation to build a private torture chamber inside a family home."

Gareth stood up trembling at the defense table, his lawyer trying desperately to pull him back down.

"Your Honor!" Gareth pleaded, his voice high, cracking, and pathetic. "I was trying to discipline them! They were unruly! Their mother approved every decision!"

"Silence!" Judge Vance roared, slamming his gavel a second time.

SLAM!

"Your own recordings convicted you, Mr. Dixon," Judge Vance declared. "Your own voice, captured meticulously by the very girls you called 'stupid,' proved beyond any shadow of a doubt that you are a predator."

The judge raised his pen, signing the master sentencing document with sharp, sweeping strokes.

GARETH DIXON: Sentenced to twenty-eight years in a state maximum-security penitentiary without the possibility of early parole.

BRENDA VANCE (MOTHER): Sentenced to six years in a state facility for criminal child neglect, perjury, and accessory to felony abuse.

RICHARD DIXON: Stripped permanently of his law enforcement credentials, serving four years for obstruction of justice and witness intimidation.

My mother let out a loud, pathetic sob as bailiffs stepped forward, slapping heavy steel restraints around her and Gareth’s wrists, dragging them both through the side exit doors toward the holding cells.

Gareth turned his head one final time, looking at Lydia and me standing at the prosecution table.

We didn't look away. We held our heads high, our shoulders broad, our eyes clear and completely free of fear.
