Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost PierBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor executive command suite at The Vale Logistics Tower overlooking Boston Harbor was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the private elevator banks, twenty armed Vance Security operators in dark suits guarded every corridor. Inside, I sat in a plush velvet armchair, wearing a simple cashmere sweater, drinking a cup of hot chamomile tea while Bridget Colton and two federal forensic accounting experts processed the recovered files.
Across the broad black granite conference table stood Graham Vale. He had discarded his jacket, his sleeves rolled up to reveal his muscular forearms, a glass of untouched bourbon resting near his hand.
Bridget Colton slid three red-sealed corporate binders flat onto the granite table toward Graham and me:
"Graham, Audrey," Bridget spoke, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Everett Vale, his shell companies, and the 2022 pier collapse is complete."
Graham leaned over the table, his storm-gray eyes locked onto mine with an intense, raw devotion that made my heart leap in my chest. "Explain it to my wife, Bridget."
Bridget tapped the digital files:
THE METALLURGICAL SWAP PROTOCOL: Procurement logs from 2022 proving Everett Vale ordered sub-standard steel alloys through a Panamanian shell company, forging Arthur Lennox’s signature on the secondary inspection forms.
THE THIRTY-FIVE-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Intercepted banking registries documenting Everett Vale systematically diverting $35 million from the Vale Family Grandfather Trust into offshore accounts over four years.
THE SOVEREIGN PROXY: Certified probate documents confirming twenty-nine-year-old Audrey Lennox-Vale as sole joint fifty-one percent controlling common stock equity holder over the entire Boston Waterfront Logistics Network upon claiming her spousal trust rights.
My hands tightened around my teacup until the porcelain creaked.
"My father spent four years watching his company collapse and his reputation get dragged through the dirt while your uncle bought yachts with the money he stole," I rasped out, every word falling like an iron block into the quiet room.
Graham walked around the granite table, dropping flat onto one knee right in front of my chair.

The feared Mafia Don who commanded Boston’s underworld reached out, taking my cold hands into his broad, warm palms, pressing his lips gently against my knuckles.
"They used my brother's blood to manipulate me, Audrey," Graham swore, his deep baritone thick with an unshakeable, diamond-hard protective rage. "They thought I married you for eighteen months of silence. Tomorrow morning at the assembly... we show them who rules Boston."
