Chapter 3 - The Panic Sets In

The absolute dismantling of Andrew Carter’s world didn't happen over months; it occurred with the surgical, terrifying precision of a military drone strike.

While I sat in the sunlit, peaceful nursery of my family’s Lake Geneva estate—surrounded by my mother, private pediatric nurses, and my three healthy sons sleeping peacefully in custom mahogany cribs—my father kept me updated via live encrypted briefings on his study monitor.

"The boy is currently crying in the lobby of my downtown office," my father noted dryly, watching a security camera feed of the Vance Capital ground-floor reception area.

On the screen, Andrew looked pathetic. His tailored navy suit was rumpled, his hair disheveled, and his phone was pressed frantically against his ear as he paced back and forth across the marble floor, completely ignored by receptionists and security guards alike.

"Did he try to call me?" I asked, looking up from feeding my middle triplet, Leo.

"Fourteen times," my father replied without looking away from the screen. "And his mother called your mother twice, weeping hysterically about how 'unreasonable' we are being over a simple marital disagreement."

A soft knock sounded at the study door, and my mother entered, holding a fresh cup of herbal tea. She walked over, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder.

"Don't waste a single calorie of energy on them, darling," Mother said firmly. "They thought they could break our family's bloodline by humiliating you on your weakest day. Now they get to learn what happens when a wounded lioness has an entire financial apex predator backing her up."

Just then, the security monitor flashed.

A sleek black sports car pulled up outside Vance Capital’s private side entrance. Out popped Vanessa Brooks, her face flushed with frantic anger, carrying her expensive black Birkin bag like a weapon as she bypassed the revolving doors and headed straight for the private elevator banks.

She had no idea that her name was currently at the center of a federal bank fraud investigation.

Because Andrew had used corporate funds from Carter Developments to purchase the Birkin bag and finance Vanessa's luxury apartment lease while married to me, our legal team classified those expenditures as corporate embezzlement and marital waste.

"Watch this," my father muttered, a rare, wolfish smile touching the corners of his mouth.

On the screen, Vanessa stepped out of the private elevator on the forty-fifth floor, marching straight toward Marcus Sterling’s office suite. Before she could even reach the glass doors, two corporate security guards intercepted her.

One of them politely—yet firmly—held out a large manila envelope.

We watched through the silent security feed as Vanessa tore open the envelope. A single legal document fell out into her hands.

It was an immediate eviction notice for her luxury high-rise condo, accompanied by a federal subpoena ordering her to surrender all luxury goods, designer handbags, and jewelry purchased with embezzled corporate funds to the court receiver within twenty-four hours.

On the screen, Vanessa dropped her precious Birkin bag onto the marble floor. Her mouth opened in a silent scream of disbelief and pure, unadulterated rage.

She looked up at the security camera lens, as if she could see right through it to us.

And for the first time since she stood in my hospital room holding her designer purse like a crown, Vanessa Brooks looked utterly, hopelessly defeated.
