Chapter 2 - The Lion’s Den

By Tuesday morning, Andrew Carter was sitting in the executive boardroom of Carter Developments, basking in the glow of what he believed was an undisputed victory.

According to reports from our corporate intelligence operatives—men who had worked for my father for decades—Andrew had spent his morning laughing with his colleagues about how easily he had disposed of his exhausted wife and secured his assets before the courts could blink. Vanessa Brooks had already visited the Lincoln Park estate twice that morning, measuring drapes and picking out interior designers to remodel my nursery.

They were celebrating on borrowed time.

At precisely 10:00 AM, the massive mahogany doors of the Carter Developments boardroom didn't just open—they were pushed wide by two armed private security guards wearing federal-grade credentials.

Andrew stood up at the head of the conference table, his face flushing with arrogant indignation. "What is the meaning of this?! Who authorized you to enter private corporate property?"

A tall, impeccably dressed man stepped into the boardroom. It wasn't my father. It was Marcus Sterling, the managing partner of the city's most feared corporate litigation firm—a firm that happened to retain a multi-million-dollar annual retainer exclusively with Vance Capital.

Mr. Sterling adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, offering Andrew a smile that held zero warmth.

"Good morning, Mr. Carter," Sterling said smoothly, tossing a thick, red-ribboned dossier directly onto the center of the polished conference table, sliding it right next to Andrew’s imported coffee cup. "My name is Marcus Sterling. I represent Mrs. Emma Vance-Carter."

The room went dead silent. Several junior executives seated around the table froze.

"Vance...?" Andrew stammered, the color rapidly draining from his sun-kissed face. "What are you talking about? Her last name is just Vance. Her father is... she’s nobody!"

"Her father is Richard Vance," Sterling corrected coldly, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "The majority shareholder of Vance Capital, the primary underwriter of your father’s commercial real estate debts, and the man who currently holds thirty-four promissory notes that keep your family's entire business empire from filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy before the week is out."

Andrew grabbed the edge of the table, his knuckles turning stark white. "That’s... that’s impossible. You're bluffing! Emma doesn't have money! She lived with me in a normal—"

"Emma lived with you because she wanted to see if you possessed genuine character," Sterling interrupted sharply, leaning over the table. "Instead, you demonstrated profound greed, financial fraud, and malicious abandonment of a postpartum mother and three newborn American citizens."

Sterling gestured to the dossier.

"Allow me to outline your morning schedule, Mr. Carter. First, the fraudulent deed transfer of the Lincoln Park estate into Vanessa Brooks’s name has been flagged as felony mortgage fraud and wire fraud; federal marshals are currently seizing the property back into a court-mandated receivership. Second, every corporate credit card, business line of credit, and personal trust account tied to your name has been frozen under emergency pre-judgment asset injunctions. And third..."

May you like

Sterling paused, letting the silence stretch like a guillotine blade.

"...your father's company is being called in on its primary loans effective immediately. By sundown, Carter Developments won't even own the desk you're sitting behind."
