Chapter 7 - Sunrise Over the Harbor

Six months later.
The winter snow had melted away, replaced by the bright, salt-scented breeze of an early summer morning rolling off Lake Michigan.
The glass roof of the winter garden sparkled brilliantly in the morning sun, reflecting the emerald green of the imported trees and the crystal-clear water of the marble fountains. The guards at the perimeter were gone, replaced by a quiet, unobtrusive security detail that blended seamlessly into the estate's natural landscaping.
I stood on the stone balcony overlooking the private harbor, my hands resting lightly on the wrought-iron railing.
Behind me, the rhythmic thump-thump of small, eager footsteps echoed across the marble floor of the garden.
"Caleb! Hurry up!" Lily’s voice rang out, full of childish impatience and boundless joy. "Leo brought the portable speaker, and you promised you'd try the spin move!"
I turned around slowly, my legs moving with a steady, independent rhythm that required no conscious thought, no sheer force of will. Just muscle, bone, and life.
Lily stood near the center of the garden, holding her battered speaker aloft like a trophy, while her older brother shook his head with an embarrassed grin, queuing up an upbeat, chaotic pop track.
As the music blasted through the glass-domed sanctuary, Lily started spinning in circles, her laughter filling every corner of the room.
I walked toward her, stepping out of the shadows of the past and into the blinding, beautiful light of the present.
I wasn't just the Harbor King anymore. I was a man standing on his own two feet, ready to face whatever storms rolled in off the lake.
May you like
And as I broke into a clumsy, uncoordinated spin right beside her, laughing until my ribs ached, I knew that some intruders didn't break into your life to destroy you.
Sometimes, they break in just in time to save you.
