Chapter 4 - The Counter-Offensive

The conference room on the 42nd floor of Walker Tower hummed with a tense, razor-sharp energy. It was 8:00 AM on Tuesday, less than forty-eight hours after the aborted wedding, but Ethan looked like a man who hadn't slept a wink in a decade. His bespoke charcoal suit was immaculate, his dark hair combed back with precise discipline, and his eyes carried the cold, unyielding focus of a commander preparing to storm a fortress.

Seated around the mahogany boardroom table were Daniel Brooks, three senior forensic accountants, the head of Walker Development’s private security division, and Marcus Vance—a veteran investigator who had spent fifteen years hunting white-collar criminals across the eastern seaboard.

“Let’s review the assets,” Ethan said, his voice cutting through the hum of the air conditioning like a steel blade. He didn't sit at the head of the table; instead, he stood before the massive smart screen, tapping the remote to display a complex web of corporate entities, shell companies, and bank accounts.

Marcus clicked his pen, standing up to take over the briefing. “Mr. Walker is correct. Based on the flash drive contents and our overnight forensic audit of Vanessa Cole’s digital footprint, we’ve mapped out her entire operation. She wasn't acting alone. Her primary funding for the past three years came through a shell corporation called Apex Holdings, registered in the Cayman Islands—the exact same shell company federal prosecutors linked to Arthur Calloway’s illicit shipping syndicates before his arrest.”

“So Calloway financed her infiltration of my life,” Ethan stated flatly.

“To the tune of 4.2 million dollars deposited in incremental tranches over thirty-six months,” Marcus confirmed, tapping the screen to display transaction logs. “Her objective was twofold: first, secure a legal marriage to you to gain community property rights over Walker Development’s expanding commercial portfolio; second, establish permanent legal paternity over a child carrying Calloway blood so that if anything ever happened to you, Calloway’s bloodline would inherit controlling shares of your estate.”

A murmur of disbelief rippled through the senior accountants around the table.

Daniel leaned forward, resting his chin on his hands. “And the baby? Legally, Ethan, if you challenge paternity now, the courts will require a formal DNA test. Once the biological truth comes out, Calloway’s legal team could potentially file for third-party grandparent visitation or custody rights, using the child as an ongoing anchor in your life.”

Ethan turned away from the screen. He walked slowly toward the windows overlooking the Manhattan skyline, watching the morning traffic crawl across the bridges connecting Brooklyn to the financial district.

“Noah doesn't know who Arthur Calloway is,” Ethan said quietly, his voice dropping an octave. “He doesn't know what a shell company is. All he knows is that when he cries at night, I’m the one who picks him up, and when he wakes up in the morning, Grace is there with his bottle. I’m not letting a criminal syndicate or a fraudulent mother touch my son.”

“Legally speaking, we have a window,” Daniel said, his litigation instincts kicking into high gear. “Since Vanessa attempted to use the flash drive contents to blackmail you into a five-million-dollar settlement last night, she committed felony extortion and wire fraud. Under New York penal law, an individual who attempts extortion forfeits any civil claims to marital assets or spousal support arising from an invalidated contract. Furthermore, because she knowingly committed fraud to induce you into signing a fraudulent birth acknowledgment under false pretenses, we can petition the family court for an emergency administrative annulment of paternity fraud, while simultaneously filing an expedited adoption petition in your name to secure your legal rights permanently before she can file a counter-claim.”

Ethan turned back around, his eyes locking onto his attorney. “Do it. File the papers before lunch. I want every single federal prosecutor and family court judge in this state reviewing her file by sunset.”

“What about Vanessa herself?” Marcus asked, a grim smile touching the corner of his mouth. “She’s currently holed up in a luxury boutique hotel in SoHo, waiting for your response to her blackmail demand. She thinks you’re sweating.”

“Let her sweat,” Ethan said coldly. “Give her exactly twenty-four hours to realize that her backers in federal prison can’t save her from the trap she walked into.”

Three miles downtown, sitting in the velvet armchair of her SoHo hotel suite, Vanessa Cole stared at her phone with mounting panic.

It was 2:00 PM. She had sent her blackmail letter through her courier twenty-four hours ago, demanding five million dollars and the immediate dropping of the civil fraud suit by Friday noon. But instead of receiving a frantic call from Ethan’s lawyers begging for a quiet settlement, her phone had remained dead silent all morning.

Her heart hammered against her ribs as she tapped her screen again, refreshing her email inbox. Nothing. No messages from Ethan, no calls from her legal counsel, not even a notification from her bank app.

She stood up, pacing across the expensive Persian rug in her silk robe, her mind racing. Ethan wasn't a man who ignored threats. He was aggressive, calculating, and fiercely protective of his corporate reputation. Why wasn't he fighting back? Why was there only silence?

Suddenly, the heavy oak door of her hotel suite rattled violently.

Before Vanessa could turn toward the entryway, the door swung open with a resounding crash. Four men in dark suits—not hotel security, but federal marshals accompanied by two local detectives—poured into the suite.

“Vanessa Cole?” the lead marshal demanded, flashing a gold badge.

“Wh-what is this?” Vanessa stammered, backing away until the back of her legs hit the edge of the velvet sofa. “You can’t just barge into my room! Do you know who I am? My husband is—”

“You have no husband, Ms. Cole,” the detective interrupted coldly, pulling a set of steel handcuffs from his belt. “You are under arrest for felony wire fraud, attempted extortion, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit civil fraud.”

“No!” Vanessa screamed, lunging toward her designer handbag on the coffee table, but a marshal intercepted her instantly, pinning her wrists behind her back with practiced efficiency.

As the cold metal clicked around her wrists, the world she had so carefully constructed—the designer clothes, the social standing, the billion-dollar safety net—dissolved into thin air.

As they dragged her toward the hallway, past the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bustling streets of SoHo, Vanessa realized the terrifying truth: Ethan Walker hadn't ignored her threat.

He had simply bypassed the negotiation entirely and gone straight for the jugular.
