Chapter 3 - The Breach in the Crown

The crimson strobe lights cut through the penthouse like rotating knife blades. The low, pulsing hum of the emergency lockdown system drowned out the ambient noise of the city outside as massive steel shutters slammed down over the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, plunging the master suite into deep, artificial shadows.
Sebastian moved with terrifying speed. In one fluid motion, he hauled a heavy steel floor safe open beside the mahogany wardrobe, pulling out a matte-black Sig Sauer P226 and a tactical shoulder holster. He strapped it on over his shirt with lethal efficiency, checking the magazine lock by instinct alone.
“Get off the bed. Now,” Sebastian ordered, his voice cutting through the blaring alarm.
Valerie didn't hesitate. Adrenaline surged through her veins, chasing away the remnants of exhaustion. She grabbed her clothes scattered across the floor, hurriedly pulling on her jeans and sweater while keeping her eyes locked on Sebastian.
“What is it?” she asked, her voice tight. “An attack?”
“Standard perimeter breach,” Sebastian muttered, tapping into his encrypted wrist comm. “Mara, report. Security grid status?”
For a few seconds, only static hissed through the comm channel. Then Mara Feldman’s voice broke through, interrupted by the dull, rhythmic thud of muffled gunfire in the background.
“Boss, we’ve been compromised from the inside,” Mara shouted over the noise of breaking glass. “Floor forty-two security relays just went offline. It’s a clean sweep—mercenaries, professional grade. They bypassed the biometric scanners using your administrative codes.”
Sebastian’s face darkened into a mask of pure fury. “Administrative codes? Only two people in this city have those codes—me and my head of security, Dominic Vance.”
“Well, Dominic isn't answering his radio,” Mara panted, sounds of shouting echoing behind her. “Get out through the private roof helipad now! They’re blowing the elevator shaft!”
Boom.
The floor beneath them shook violently as a concussive blast echoed upward from the lower levels, rattling the ceiling fixtures and raining fine plaster dust down onto the carpet.
Sebastian grabbed Valerie by the wrist, hauling her off the bed before she could fully process the chaos. He shoved her toward a hidden panel behind the walk-in closet—a reinforced panic room access hatch.
“Inside. Do not open it for anyone except me,” Sebastian commanded, pressing his palm against the biometric scanner. The heavy steel door hissed open, revealing a compact, illuminated survival shelter equipped with digital monitors and a secondary comm link.
Valerie resisted, pulling her arm back. “What about you? You’re not staying out here alone to fight an army!”
“My men are compromised, and my house is burning,” Sebastian said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm decree. “If I don't stop them here, they will hunt you down before you reach the elevator. Get inside, Valerie. That is an order.”
Before she could speak, he pushed her gently backward into the secure compartment and punched the manual lock sequence from the outside. The heavy steel vault door slammed shut with a hydraulic thud, sealing her in complete, claustrophobic silence.

Outside in the penthouse, Sebastian turned away from the panel, drawing his pistol as the reinforced double doors of the master suite began to splinter under the impact of a heavy breaching charge.
The smoke rolled in, thick and gray, carrying the unmistakable scent of cordite and impending death.
