Chapter 3 - The Light of Day

The wail of the ambulance siren cut through the dark suburban night, tearing down the winding driveway of the Voss estate as it sped toward St. Catherine’s Medical Center. Inside the sterile, brightly lit back of the ambulance, the heart monitors beeped with a steady, rhythmic urgency that felt to Elena like the ticking of a clock counting down her rebirth.
Paramedic Sarah, a compassionate woman with kind eyes and steady hands, gently checked Elena’s vital signs while securing an IV line into her arm.
"You're doing incredible, honey," Sarah encouraged her, wiping a damp cloth across Elena’s forehead. "Your blood pressure is stabilizing, but contractions are coming two minutes apart. We need to get you straight into labor and delivery the second we hit the hospital doors."
Beside the stretcher, holding Elena’s free hand with a grip so tight her knuckles were white, sat Rebecca. Her phone was buzzing continuously in her coat pocket—notifications from the family lawyers, updates from the state police, and frantic messages from relatives who were already mobilizing to support them.
"I still can't believe you survived down there for three weeks, Ellie," Rebecca whispered, her voice trembling as she brushed a tear from her cheek. "When your ping finally hit my phone with those three words—Help me, Bec—and that audio file played... I thought I was listening to a ghost."
"I couldn't die, Bec," Elena murmured, closing her eyes as another wave of pain crested and receded. "Not while he was still breathing. I kept thinking about the baby... and I kept thinking about how much work I put into building his company before he threw me away. He thought he owned me. He thought because I came from nothing, he could erase me."
"He didn't erase anything," Rebecca said fiercely, squeezing her hand. "The police have his corporate servers, his bank records, and the burner phone. When we walked into that house tonight, our private investigators had already filed emergency injunctions freezing every single corporate asset Marcus owns. By morning, Sloane Infrastructure Group won't even belong to him anymore. It’ll be tied up in civil restitution suits for damages."
Elena opened her eyes, a fierce, cold smile touching her pale lips. Good. Marcus loved his money, his status, and his power above all else. Taking his freedom was only the first step; stripping him of his empire would be the true execution.
Fifteen minutes later, the ambulance tires screeched to a halt outside the emergency bay of St. Catherine’s Medical Center.
As the rear doors flew open, a team of doctors and nurses rushed forward with a rolling bed. But as they wheeled Elena through the sliding glass doors into the brightly lit trauma corridor, Elena froze.
Standing near the nurse's station, looking exhausted, disheveled, and pale, was Dr. Adrian Bennett—the lead obstetrician who had monitored her pregnancy through her early months before Marcus cut off all her medical appointments and forced her into isolation.
Dr. Bennett’s eyes widened in sheer disbelief as he saw the bruised, battered state of his former patient being rushed past on a stretcher.
"Elena?!" Dr. Bennett gasped, jogging alongside the bed as the nurses pushed her toward Labor and Delivery Room 4. "Good Lord... what happened to you? Last I heard from Marcus, he told me you had traveled out of state to stay with family!"
"He lied," Elena panted through gritted teeth, gripping the side rail as another contraction hit with sledgehammer force. "He locked me in our basement. For three weeks. Without food. Without medical care."

Dr. Bennett stopped dead in his tracks, his professional composure shattering into absolute rage. He turned to the head nurse rushing beside him. "Prep an emergency obstetric team immediately! Call Dr. Harrison in surgery! Notify hospital security—I want local law enforcement stationed outside this door. Nobody touches this patient, and nobody enters this room except her sister!"
He looked down at Elena, his expression a mix of profound sorrow and fierce determination. "You're safe now, Elena. We're going to bring your baby into this world safely. And I swear to you, I will personally testify in court about every single falsified medical record Marcus tried to force me to sign."
