Chapter 5 - Checkmate in the Dark

Jonathan Cole’s face flushed a deep, mottled red, but he forced a nervous laugh, trying to mask his panic as he gestured toward the shadows behind the crates.

"Put the gun down, Sloane," Cole sneered, snapping his fingers.

From behind the stacks of industrial shelving, four armed enforcers stepped out into the light, automatic weapons raised and trained directly on Mason’s chest.

Richard Vance let out a breath of relief, quickly scuttling behind Cole’s shoulder. "You're outnumbered, Mason! Drop the weapon. We have the ports, we have the trust funds, and now we’re going to have your life."

Mason didn't flinch. He didn't drop his aim by a single millimeter. Instead, a cold, chilling smile touched the corners of his lips.

"You think I came here alone, Richard?" Mason’s voice echoed across the cavernous warehouse.

Before Cole’s enforcers could react, the high-altitude skylights overhead shattered with a deafening crash of breaking glass.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

Stun grenades rained down from the catwalks, detonating with blinding flashes of white light and thunderous concussive roars that rattled the concrete floor. At the same exact moment, the heavy metal roller doors at the front of the warehouse were blown off their tracks as two armored Sloane security vehicles smashed through the barrier, their high-beam headlights blinding everyone inside.

Before Cole’s men could recover their bearings, Marco and a dozen heavily armed tactical operatives swarmed from the shadows, disarming the mercenaries in seconds with ruthless, calculated efficiency.

Jonathan Cole lunged desperately toward a table where a heavy iron wrench lay, but Mason closed the distance across the floor in a fraction of a second. With a violent sweep of his foot, Mason kicked the wrench away, grabbed Cole by the collar of his expensive Italian suit, and slammed him against the concrete pillar with enough force to knock the wind entirely out of his lungs.

"You wanted my empire, Jonathan?" Mason whispered right into Cole’s ear, the barrel of his pistol pressing firmly against Cole’s forehead. "Empire is built by men who bleed for it. You’re just a parasite living off inherited wealth."

Cole gasped for air, his eyes wide with absolute terror. "Please... Sloane... don't..."

Mason pulled back, striking Cole across the jaw with the heavy butt of his pistol, sending the rival billionaire crashing unconscious to the floor.

Richard Vance dropped to his knees, his hands raised in surrender, weeping openly as Marco zip-tied his wrists behind his back.

Mason didn't waste another second on them. He turned on his heel, holstered his weapon, and sprinted toward the metal chair where Claire was still bound.

With shaking hands, Mason sliced through the zip-ties binding her wrists, pulling her instantly into his arms. He buried his face in her dark hair, inhaling her familiar scent, feeling the warmth of her body against his chest.

"I'm here," Mason choked out, his voice finally breaking the iron composure he had maintained all night. "I've got you, Claire. You're safe."

Claire wrapped her arms around his neck, pressing her face against his shoulder, letting out a ragged, exhausted sob of pure relief. "I knew you’d come," she whispered. "I knew you wouldn't let them win."
