Chapter 6 - The Audit on the FloorArthur Miller puffed out his chest, stepping two paces closer to me, waving his manila folder in my face. "You think you can intimidate us with your lawyers, Ian?! We're your parents! The court of public opinion will ruin your restaurant business by tomorrow morning!"

Marcus Vance stepped forward, opening a sleek black leather briefcase, pulling out three certified court documents and a high-definition digital tablet connected to the restaurant's projection screen.

"Mr. Arthur Miller," Marcus spoke cleanly, his deep baritone sharp as a razor blade. "Under Section 402 of the Illinois Cyber-Slander and Commercial Extortion Act, your public disruption tonight constitutes deliberate corporate sabotage."

Marcus tapped the tablet screen once.

The high-definition display screens mounted throughout The Copper Oak's dining room illuminated with certified financial audits, police reports, and bank transfers:

PROOFS OF FULL DEBT LIQUIDATION ($300,000): Documenting Ian Miller paying off Arthur Miller's illegal gambling debts five years ago.

RENT-FREE HOUSING RECORD (60 MONTHS): Documenting $150,000 in unpaid housing expenses covered entirely by Ian Miller.

SECURITY FOOTAGE FROM SUNDAY (15:42 PM): Capturing thirty-two-year-old Tessa Miller throwing a heavy leather shoe at seven-month-pregnant Clare Miller while Arthur Miller laughed and Brenda Miller instructed Clare to sit on the floor.

The two hundred high-society guests in the dining room went dead, breathlessly quiet.

The hushed murmurs of sympathy evaporated instantly, replaced by sharp gasps of disgust and absolute horror directed flat at my family.

A prominent female judge sitting at table two set her wineglass down with a loud CLICK, looking at my mother kneeling on the floor with pure disdain. "Horrible people... throwing shoes at a pregnant woman."

"Furthermore," Marcus Vance announced into the silent room, "an emergency Civil Restraining Injunction was executed by the Cook County Superior Court two hours ago. Arthur, Brenda, and Tessa Miller are permanently barred from coming within five hundred feet of Ian Miller, Clare Miller, or any commercial property owned by Miller Enterprises."

Arthur’s face turned an ugly, paper-white shade of green. His jaw sagged open in total, speech-bound horror as he realized his public blackmail attempt had completely, catastrophically backfired.

Tessa dropped her phone camera onto the carpet, her hands shaking in total, pathetic terror as two uniformed police officers stepped through the front entrance of the restaurant.

"Arthur, Brenda, and Tessa Miller," the lead officer declared flatly. "You are under arrest for Criminal Trespass, Commercial Extortion, and Violation of a Protection Order."

CLICK. CLICK.

Heavy steel handcuffs locked around my father’s, mother’s, and sister’s wrists behind their backs.

Tessa began to shriek hysterically as she was hoisted up by her elbows. "IAN! PLEASE! TELL THEM TO STOP! WE'RE YOUR FAMILY! I'M YOUR SISTER!"

I looked at Tessa groveling in chains with quiet, weightless peace.

"My family is at home, Tessa," I answered softly, every word dropped like a final, unbroken truth. "And she is sitting in her own chair."

The entire dining room erupted into thunderous, standing applause as my parents and sister were dragged out through the double mahogany doors in total, public disgrace.
