Chapter 7 - The Crown We ShareTwo years after that rainy night at the Belmont Hotel, the annual Philadelphia Mayor’s Charity Gala returned to the grand ballroom.

The chandeliers sparkled just as brightly. The champagne flutes bubbled with the same expensive vintage. The city’s elite mingled in their designer gowns and tailored tuxedos, whispering, laughing, and playing the endless game of high-society politics.
When the heavy oak doors at the entrance opened, the conversations didn't just soften—they hushed entirely.
Carter Battalia walked in, his black tuxedo immaculate, his dark eyes surveying the room with absolute, unyielding authority.
And walking right beside him—not hiding behind his shoulder, not lingering near the bar, and certainly not wearing a red dress chosen by someone else—was me.
I wore a custom-tailored, midnight-blue velvet evening gown that shimmered softly under the lights, designed by an independent atelier I had personally handpicked. My head was held high, my posture straight, carrying the quiet, unshakable confidence of a woman who owned her own name, her own art, and her own destiny.
Across the room, standing near the dessert table in a slightly dated green dress that had clearly seen better galas, Vanessa froze. Her eyes widened in absolute shock as she watched the mayor himself hurry across the floor to greet us, bowing slightly as he shook Carter’s hand and warmly kissed my cheek.
Carter slid his arm around my waist, his warm fingers pressing firmly against my back, anchoring me in the center of the glittering room.
He leaned down, his lips brushing my ear as the string quartet began to play a slow, sweeping waltz.
"Shall we dance, Mrs. Battalia?" he whispered, his voice thick with pride and deep, possessive love.
I looked up into his eyes, smiling softly as the music swelled around us.
May you like
"I thought you'd never ask, Mr. Battalia," I whispered back.
And as we stepped out onto the center of the marble floor, surrounded by a city that once ignored me, I knew I would never have to disappear again.
