Chapter 7 - The Empire Built on TruthThree years later, the grand ballroom of the Belmont Hotel was packed once again for the annual autumn philanthropy gala. The crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, blinding light across the sea of silk, velvet, and diamonds, exactly as they had on the night that changed everything.

A woman in a bespoke, deep emerald-green silk gown—a color that commanded the room without screaming for attention—stood near the grand staircase, speaking effortlessly with the city’s chief magistrate and the director of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Her posture was straight, her chin held high, and her eyes held the quiet, unshakable confidence of a woman who knew her own worth.

From across the ballroom, leaning casually against a marble pillar with a glass of scotch in his hand, Carter Battalia watched his wife with an expression of unwavering devotion. The underworld of Philadelphia had long since stabilized under his absolute, undisputed rule, but the most formidable empire he had ever built was the sanctuary they shared together.

Near the dessert table, Vanessa Belmont—dressed in a bright red gown that now looked desperate rather than dazzling—stood alone, attempting to catch the eye of a junior city councilman who quickly excused himself to speak with someone else. Vanessa had tried for years to re-enter Carter’s orbit, only to find every door firmly, permanently bolted shut by a syndicate leader who protected his wife like a dragon guarding its hoard.

Diana excused herself from the magistrate and walked gracefully across the polished marble floor toward her husband.

Carter straightened up, setting his glass down on a passing waiter’s tray, and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest despite the hundreds of watching eyes.

"You're staring," Diana murmured with a soft smile, resting her hands against the lapels of his immaculate black tuxedo.

"I have a habit of looking at masterpieces," Carter replied, pressing a gentle kiss to her temple. "Are you ready to go home, Mrs. Battalia?"

Diana looked around the glittering ballroom—the same room where she had once hidden near the bar, praying she would remain invisible. Now, she owned every inch of the space simply by standing beside the man who loved her out in the open.

"Always," Diana whispered, taking his hand as they walked out the grand front doors together, leaving the whispers, the shadows, and the past far behind them.
