Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Borrowed CrownThe silence across the Rosewood Grand terrace hit with the weight of a falling anvil.

Three hundred of Greenwich's most prominent real estate titans, investment bankers, and socialites stood frozen. Flashbulbs stopped blinking. The quiet hum of the autumn wind rustling the yellow oak leaves was the only sound left.

"C-Chairwoman...?" my mother, Eleanor, stammered, her voice cracking into a high, pathetic screech as she dropped her microphone. "Daniel... what did you just call her?! She's Emily! She's a failed hospitality worker!"

Daniel Brooks turned around slowly, his face carved from cold granite. He adjusted his executive name badge—which bore the official seal of Carter Holdings Inc.

"Mrs. Carter," Daniel spoke flatly, every word falling like an iron block into the silent crowd. "Miss Emily Carter is not a failed worker. She is the founder, CEO, and sole equity owner of Carter Holdings Inc., which owns the Rosewood Grand Estate, the Stamford Maritime Terminal, and sixty-two luxury hospitality properties across North America."

Richard Carter’s face went from arrogant red to a sickening shade of grey. He stumbled backward against the marble head table, his hands shaking frantically. "No... no, that's impossible! She left home twelve years ago with nothing! I told her she was delusional!"

"You were wrong, Mr. Carter," Bridget Colton stepped forward, opening the heavy leather binder, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "And as of four minutes ago, your family's financial illusion is completely finished."

Bridget turned toward thirty-five-year-old groom Brandon Mitchell, sliding three red-sealed corporate ledger documents into his hands:

THE FRAUDULENT DOWRY AUDIT: Certified banking records proving Brandon Mitchell’s firm, Mitchell Capital, illegally pledged $1.2 million in fake collateral—stolen from a Carter Holdings subsidiary account—to finance his wedding deposit.

THE TERMINATION OF LEASE: Immediate, non-negotiable cancellation of the Mitchell-Carter wedding contract due to gross physical assault, property damage, and breach of peaceful assembly codes.

IMMEDIATE EVICTION & CIVIL SEIZURE: Total repossession of the Rosewood Grand Estate premises, effective immediately at 4:15 PM.

Brandon Mitchell went hyperventilatingly pale. He grabbed his new bride's arm, his voice trembling in sheer panic. "Vanessa! What is she talking about?! You told me your family owned real estate portfolios! You told me your father was backing our investment fund!"

Vanessa was shaking so violently her veil slipped off her hair. "Emily... Emily, please!" she shrieked, running toward me, her hands outstretched in groveling panic. "We were just joking! It was just family teasing! It's my wedding day! You can't ruin my wedding day!"

I wrapped the warm cashmere robe tighter around my wet shoulders, looking down at my younger sister with an icy, sovereign detachment.

"You didn't just tease me, Vanessa," I said, my voice carrying with absolute, terrifying authority. "You stood in front of three hundred people, turned a hose on your sister, and called me a penniless embarrassment on my own property."

I looked over at Marcus Vance.

"Marcus," I commanded flatly.

May you like

"Yes, Chairwoman Carter?"

"Clear my terrace."
