Chapter 5 - The Final ConfessionDante stood frozen, holding the paper in his shaking hand, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps.

His capos backed away slightly into the deeper shadows of the cellar, recognizing that their boss’s financial empire was currently hanging by a thread held by the man standing across the table.
Arthur looked down at me, offering a warm, reassuring smile. “I’ll wait for you upstairs in the main dining room, darling. Give you two minutes to close this chapter.”
“Thank you, Arthur,” I murmured, reaching up to press my hand against his.
Arthur turned and walked out of the wine cellar, accompanied by his two security directors, leaving me alone in the vast, shadowed room with Dante.
Dante didn't move. He dropped the paper onto the table, rounded the mahogany wood, and dropped heavily into the chair beside mine.
The terrifying mob boss was gone. In his place sat a broken, hollowed-out man whose arrogance had destroyed everything he had ever cared about.
“Claire…” Dante whispered, his voice cracking, tears finally welling in his dark gray eyes. “Please… don't do this to me. Don't leave me like this.”
I looked at him, feeling no anger, no hatred, and no desire for revenge. I felt only a profound, weightless relief.
“You did this to yourself, Dante,” I said softly.
“I didn't love her!” Dante sobbed, covering his face with his hands, his broad shoulders shaking violently beneath his custom shirt. “I swear to God on my mother’s grave, I never loved Lily! It was one night in Reno after my father died! I was drowning in grief, I was out of my mind, and she came to my hotel room! I woke up the next morning wanting to die because I knew I had ruined my life with you!”
“And yet, you kept lying for eighteen months,” I countered, my voice steady and firm. “You let her get pregnant. You let my mother cover it up. You let them treat me like an inconvenience in that hospital corridor.”
“Because I was terrified!” Dante roared, lifting his tear-streaked face, looking at me with wild, desperate eyes. “I knew if you found out, you would walk away! I thought if I kept it hidden, if I provided for the baby quietly, I could keep you! You were my anchor, Claire! You were the only good, clean thing in my filthy, violent life!”
“I was your wife, Dante,” I corrected, standing up slowly from my chair, looking down at him. “Not your anchor. Not your absolution. I was a human being who gave you four years of absolute loyalty, and you repaid me by sleeping with my sister in my own family’s shadow.”
He reached out his trembling, calloused hand, trying to grab the hem of my velvet dress, begging like a child. “Claire… please… just tell me you loved me once. Tell me it wasn't all a lie.”
I looked down at his trembling hand, remembering the young woman who had sat in this very restaurant four years ago, believing that Dante Moretti’s protective aura was love.
“I loved the man I thought you were, Dante,” I answered quietly. “I loved the husband who promised to protect me. But that man never existed. You were just a coward hiding behind an empire.”
I stepped back, out of his reach.

“My husband is waiting for me upstairs,” I said. “Goodbye, Dante.”
I turned on my heel and walked out of the cellar, the heavy iron doors swinging shut behind me, sealing Dante Moretti away in the dark ruins of his own making.
