Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the SystemI didn't go to a local hospital where my mother's political connections could monitor my chart.

Marcus Vance had me transported via private medical helicopter directly to the high-security federal wing of Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans, under the direct supervision of Dr. Rebecca Sullivan—a world-renowned neurologist who specialized in rare autoimmune disorders.

Within six hours of my arrival, three vials of fresh immunoglobulin were dripping into my veins through an IV line.

For four days, I lay in a private, sunlit room overlooking the river, watching the color slowly return to my skin. The paralysis, caught just before it reached my diaphragm, began its slow, painful retreat.

Sitting in the leather chair beside my bed every single day was Marcus Vance, accompanied by Federal Prosecutor Rachel Hayes—a sharp, elegant woman with dark hair and hazel eyes that burned with absolute, unyielding justice.

On the fifth morning, Rachel set a sleek digital tablet on my bedside tray.

"Una," Rachel spoke gently. "The decryption key you provided from Tony Barrett's server gave us everything we needed. We didn't just find proof of insurance fraud. We found thirty-two off-ledger accounts in the Cayman Islands, evidence of systemic bribery, and the original trust agreement established by your biological father, Edward Sterling."

My eyes widened. "My father...?"

"Edward Sterling didn't die of natural causes nine years ago, Una," Rachel revealed, her voice dropping into a serious, heavy register. "He left you a fifty-five-million-dollar controlling stake in Sterling Maritime Holdings, managed in an irrevocable trust that was supposed to transfer to you on your twenty-first birthday."

She tapped the tablet screen, displaying a series of notarized documents stamped with gold legal seals.

"Sheila married Tony Barrett six months after your father’s death," Rachel explained. "Together, they systematically falsified your medical records, withheld your treatments to keep you weak and dependent, and attempted to push you toward total physical collapse so Tony could claim guardianship over the Sterling Trust."

Tears filled my eyes—not of sadness, but of a quiet, terrifying rage that forged my broken spirit into pure steel.

"They thought sixty-eight days would kill me," I whispered, looking up at Marcus and Rachel.

Marcus offered a cold, razor-sharp smile. "They have sixty-three days left in Paris, Una. And Prosecutor Hayes and I have decided to let them enjoy every single minute of their vacation... while we dismantle their entire world from the inside out."
