Chapter 6 - The Cleansing FireThe sun was beginning to dip below the Los Angeles skyline, casting long, bruised shadows across the courtyard of Cross Meridian Systems.

The federal investigation had moved with terrifying speed. Within six hours of the courtroom revelation, Swiss authorities had raided Victor Kronos’s Zurich penthouse, seizing the decrypted files and placing the international arms dealer under arrest. Simultaneously, federal marshals and IRS forensic accountants swarmed Evelyn’s suburban mansion and Ryan’s downtown penthouse, freezing every bank account, seizing every luxury vehicle, and towing away the physical evidence of their multi-million-dollar embezzlement scheme.

I stood on the glass-walled balcony of the executive penthouse on the top floor of Cross Meridian headquarters, looking out over the sprawling corporate campus.

The air in the office was quiet. The toxic atmosphere of corporate backstabbing, manufactured paranoia, and stolen valor was gone. For the first time in three years—since my father’s health began to fail—the building finally felt like home.

The heavy oak door of the office opened quietly. Major Walker stepped inside, holding two cups of black coffee. He handed one to me, leaning against the glass railing beside me.

"Federal prosecutors just filed formal indictments," Ethan said quietly, watching the city traffic crawl below. "Perjury, grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit espionage. Ryan is facing a mandatory minimum of fifteen years without parole. Evelyn took a plea deal to testify against her brother in exchange for a reduced sentence on the financial charges."

I took a slow sip of the coffee, feeling the warmth spread through my chest. "And Victor Kronos?"

"Extradition proceedings are already underway," Ethan replied. "He’ll spend the rest of his natural life in a supermax facility where no amount of shell companies can save him."

I looked down at my hands, tracing the faint, jagged line of the scar visible along my wrist—a quiet reminder of the day I nearly lost everything overseas.

"Dad knew," I whispered, the realization finally settling deep into my bones. "Before he died, he knew Evelyn was in contact with Victor. He knew Ryan was being groomed to gut the company from the inside."

"That's why he left you controlling shares and named you executor," Ethan said gently, turning to look at me. "He didn't just need a CEO. He needed a soldier who wouldn't break when the line got thin."

"I promised him I would protect the business," I said, my voice steady. "And I kept my word."

"You did more than that, Claire," Ethan smiled, a rare, warm expression touching his rugged face. "You cleaned house. Now... what are you going to do with the empire?"

I turned away from the glass, walking back toward the massive mahogany desk where my father’s old leather-bound journals sat stacked beside the declassified military commendations.

"We're going back to our roots, Ethan," I said, a firm, resolute light entering my eyes. "No more commercial compromises. No more shady defense contracts sold to the highest bidder. Cross Meridian Systems is going to exclusively supply encrypted, sovereign cybersecurity architecture for our allied forces and domestic infrastructure. We build a fortress. And this time, nobody gets in through the back door."

Ethan raised his coffee cup in a silent toast. "Sounds like a mission I can get behind."

"Good," I smiled, sitting down in my father's leather chair for the very first time. "Because phase one starts tomorrow morning."
