Chapter 5 - The Web of BetrayalThe name Victor Kronos hung in the air like poison.

Evelyn was shaking uncontrollably, her designer handbag slipping from her lap and spilling its contents across the carpet. She buried her face in her hands, rocking back and forth in her chair.
"You know him," I repeated, my voice hard as iron. "Answer the judge, Evelyn. Who is Victor Kronos?"
Arthur Vance leaned toward me, whispering urgently, "Claire, Kronos is a sanctioned international arms broker. If he's tied to Ryan's corporate theft, this isn't just a family inheritance dispute anymore. This is international espionage."
Judge Harrison’s face darkened into an expression of absolute fury. He slammed his gavel down—not to restore order, but out of sheer disbelief. "Mrs. Cross! Look at me. What is your relationship with Victor Kronos?"
Evelyn slowly raised her head. Her mascara was smeared, her face hollowed out by terror. She looked at Ryan, then at me, and finally whispered, "He’s... he’s my brother. Your uncle, Ryan."
Ryan’s jaw dropped. He stared at his mother in utter incomprehension. "My... my uncle? What are you talking about? You said my uncle died in Europe twenty years ago!"
"I lied!" Evelyn sobbed, the dam finally breaking. "I had to! Victor didn't die—he was exiled from the defense sector after a federal corruption scandal in the nineties! He went overseas, built a shadow syndicate, and when your father refused to let him buy into Cross Meridian Systems legally, Victor swore he would take it by force!"
Evelyn pointed a trembling finger at Ryan. "And you... you stupid, arrogant fool! You didn't just steal the company files—you walked right into his trap! He manipulated you into thinking you were outsmarting Claire, but you were just his errand boy!"
Ryan collapsed back into his chair, the color entirely draining from his face. The grand illusion of his master plan—the brilliant corporate coup he thought he had orchestrated all by himself—shattered into dust. He wasn't the mastermind. He was just a pawn used by his own mother and a fugitive arms dealer to destroy the very company his father had spent a lifetime building.
Major Walker didn't waste a second. He tapped his comms earpiece, speaking in a crisp, authoritative military cadence. "Command, this is Walker. We have a positive identification on the target node in Zurich. Initiate Asset Freeze Alpha-Zero under International Security Act Section 4. Movable assets, accounts, and secondary terminals—lock them down now."
A tinny voice crackled through his earpiece: “Copy, Major. Asset freeze initiated. Swiss federal police have been dispatched to the Zurich address. Target is contained.”
On the laptop screen, the pulsing red dot in Zurich suddenly flashed a solid, immutable blue stamp: SEIZED BY FEDERAL AUTHORITIES.
I looked down at Ryan, who was now staring blankly at the floor, his hands locked in handcuffs, shivering as the reality of a federal espionage charge washed over him. He had tried to frame me, destroy my military service, and throw me in prison. Instead, he had handed the Department of Defense an open invitation to dismantle an international criminal syndicate rooted inside our own family tree.
"You wanted my father's empire, Ryan," I said quietly, walking over to stand right in front of his chair. "You wanted it so badly you were willing to burn my life, my honor, and my service to the ground to get it."

Ryan couldn't even raise his head to look at me.
"Well, you got what you wanted," I added, my voice cold and unyielding. "You're part of the company history now. Permanently."
