Chapter 7 - The Master of Las Jacarandas

Three months later, the golden autumn sun bathed the sprawling courtyards of Las Jacarandas Ranch in a warm, healing light.

The criminal trials had been swift and devastating. With airtight digital evidence, whistleblower testimony from terrified junior accountants, and federal audit reports, Rodrigo and Otaviano Vance had been remanded to federal prison without bail, awaiting sentencing on multi-count felony indictments. Dona Letícia and Fernanda, stripped of their wealth and social standing, had been forced to vacate the estate and relocate to a modest suburban apartment in the city, their names permanently disgraced.

Inside the grand salon, the heavy mahogany table was no longer cluttered with fraudulent contracts and corporate threats. Instead, it was covered in architectural blueprints, botanical journals, and agricultural rehabilitation plans.

Mariana sat at the head of the table, wearing a simple linen dress, her hair falling softly around her shoulders.

Mateo Silva sat across from her, closing a thick legal folder with a satisfied smile. "Well, Mariana. The federal receivership has officially completed its transfer of sole proprietorship back to your name. As of this morning, you are the undisputed, legal owner of Las Jacarandas Ranch, free and clear of all encumbrances."

Mariana smiled, feeling a profound, weightless peace settle deep into her bones. "Thank you, Mateo. For everything."

"You did the heavy lifting," Mateo replied, standing up to shake her hand. "What’s the first order of business?"

"Restoration," Mariana said simply.

Later that afternoon, Mariana walked down the long dirt path toward the irrigation canal where the old mesquite tree stood tall and proud against the horizon.

As she approached the water’s edge, she paused.

There, resting in the tall grass near the bank, was a small cluster of wild white geese, foraging peacefully in the afternoon sun. One of them—a young gander with bright, intelligent eyes—lifted its head upon hearing her footsteps, tilted its neck, and let out a soft, welcoming honk before waddling eagerly toward her across the grass.

Mariana knelt down, extending her hand. The gander stopped right in front of her, pressing its soft white head gently against her open palm.

She closed her eyes, breathing in the scent of damp earth, blooming citrus, and absolute freedom.

The past was buried. The shadows had been driven out by the morning light. And Las Jacarandas Ranch finally belonged to the one person who had always truly loved it.
