Chapter 7 - Unbroken and Forever SovereignAt 7:00 PM, as the autumn sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky over Lake Michigan in brilliant shades of gold, rose, and sapphire, the backyard was illuminated by dozens of soft, twinkling fairy lights.

Six-year-old Lily stood at the head of the long wooden picnic table, surrounded by her friends, blowing out her six birthday candles in a single, united breath while everyone clapped and cheered.
She wiped a small dab of white frosting from her nose, ran up the porch steps, and threw her small arms around my knees, then hugged my father's legs.
"Grandpa!" Lily beamed, looking up with her bright hazel eyes. "This is the best birthday ever!"
Dad dropped to one knee on the wooden porch, lifting my daughter effortlessly into his broad arms, pressing a warm, sweet kiss against her forehead.
"Every birthday is going to be the best birthday from now on, sweet pea," Dad promised softly, his baritone carrying smooth, clear, and echoing warmly across the quiet yard.
I looked at my daughter, then looked at my father—the retired prosecutor who had torn down a corrupt empire with a single phone call—and felt a deep, weightless, and eternal peace settle into every corner of my soul.
