Chapter 3 - The Trap Closes

By noon, Mariana was seated across from her lawyer, Licenciado Héctor Garza, in a sleek glass-walled conference room overlooking downtown Guadalajara. Beside her sat Paulina Sandoval, whose expression was a terrifying mix of cold fury and family shame.
"The security footage is pristine," Licenciado Garza said, tapping a stylus against his tablet. He paused the video right on Victor Robles’s face while the key was jammed into the front door. "We have clear audio from the mall exchange, visual confirmation of the key transfer, and an attempted illegal forced entry this morning. This constitutes aggravated conspiracy, attempted extortion, and grand larceny."
Paulina buried her face in her hands, shaking her head. "I always knew my mother was manipulative, but tying herself to Ernesto Luján? My God. Ernesto is under federal investigation for land grabbing and real estate fraud. If he gets his hands on Mariana’s property deeds, he’ll flip the entire block into a commercial parking complex and launder millions through shell companies."
"And Alejandro?" Mariana asked, her voice dangerously quiet. "Where does my husband fit into all of this?"
Paulina lowered her hands, looking at Mariana with agonizing sympathy. "Alex has been drowning in secret gambling debts for over a year, Mariana. He lost his savings on international crypto options, and when the creditors started threatening his business, he went crying to Mother. Mother didn't have the cash to bail him out—so she engineered a plan with Ernesto Luján to sell your house out from under you, forge your signature on a quitclaim deed, and split the profits. Alex probably told himself you wouldn't notice until the papers were already signed."
The room fell dead silent. Every single jagged piece of the puzzle snapped violently into place.
Alejandro wasn't an innocent bystander caught in his mother’s web. He was the architect of his own financial ruin, willing to throw his wife and daughter out onto the street to save his own skin.
"We need to strike before they realize the morning break-in failed," Garza advised, leaning forward. "We file an emergency injunction in family court freezing all marital assets, attach the criminal evidence packet directly to the district attorney's desk, and subpoena Alejandro for an immediate deposition this afternoon under penalty of perjury."

Mariana stood up, smoothing down her blazer. Her eyes burned with a cold, unyielding fire.
"Let's set the trap," Mariana said. "I want Alejandro to walk right into my office."
