Chapter 5 - The Corporate War RoomBy her third week at Moretti Holdings, Penelope’s life had completely unraveled from its old, predictable routine. The cramped Queens studio apartment was still her home, but her old canvas duffel bag had been replaced by a designer leather briefcase, and her worn sneakers had given way to tailored loafers.

She wasn't just analyzing shipping manifests anymore; she was sitting in high-stakes corporate boardrooms across Manhattan, dismantling shell companies used by rival syndicates to launder real estate funds.
Yet, working inside the Moretti empire came with a very specific, terrifying kind of pressure.
It was a crisp Thursday evening when the tension finally boiled over. Penelope sat at her desk in the open-plan analysis bullpen on the twelfth floor, staring at a series of complex wire transfers routed through a Cayman Islands holding company linked to Marcus Vance—a ruthless independent syndicate boss who had been trying to muscle in on Moretti’s Manhattan construction contracts.
The door to Dominic’s private corner office swung open, and Dominic stepped out, looking exhausted, his tie slightly loosened, his sleeves rolled up to his forearms.
“Penelope. My office. Now,” he commanded quietly.
She grabbed her notes and followed him inside. The moment the heavy oak door clicked shut, Dominic turned around, running a hand through his dark hair.
“Vance just sent a message through municipal channels,” Dominic said, his voice cold and hard as granite. “He’s threatening to release fabricated zoning corruption documents to the New York Times tomorrow morning unless we cede control of the Hudson Yards commercial development project by midnight.”
“It’s a bluff,” Penelope said instantly, dropping her notes onto his desk.
“How do you know?” Dominic asked, crossing his arms, looking down at her with sharp intensity.
“Because if Vance actually had airtight proof of zoning corruption, he wouldn't threaten to leak it to the press—he would have handed it directly to federal prosecutors to trigger a RICO raid,” Penelope explained rapidly, her analytical mind shifting into gear. “By threatening a newspaper leak, he’s creating a public panic to force a rushed, emotional concession from you. He wants you to trade real estate equity out of fear of a PR scandal.”
Dominic stared at her for a long moment, the harsh lines of stress on his face gradually softening into an expression of deep, unwavering admiration.
“You see right through them, don't you?” Dominic murmured softly, taking a slow step toward her.
“I see people who are used to bullying everyone in the room because nobody ever bothers to check their math,” Penelope replied, holding her ground as he closed the distance between them.
The air in the private office suddenly felt very small. The distant hum of Manhattan traffic far below faded away into absolute silence. Dominic stopped just inches away from her, his tall frame shielding her from the city lights outside the glass windows.
For weeks, they had danced around the invisible line separating boss and employee, savior and saved, underworld monarch and working-class girl from Queens. But the tension had been building like a coiled spring, and tonight, the pressure was too great to ignore.
“You didn't have to stay late tonight, Penelope,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a low, intimate register that made her breath hitch in her throat. “You could have gone home hours ago.”
“Someone had to make sure your logistics data was airtight before Vance tries to blow up our construction bids,” she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.
“You worry too much about my empire,” Dominic replied, his hand rising slowly to gently brush a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. His fingers grazed her cheek, warm and steady. “I brought you into this world to protect my business, Penelope... but lately, all I find myself thinking about is protecting you.”
Penelope’s breath caught. She looked up into his grey eyes, seeing past the armor of the mafia boss, past the ruthlessness of the streets, straight into the lonely, guarded soul of the man who ruled New York.

Before she could speak, Dominic leaned down and captured her lips with his.
It wasn't a tentative, hesitant kiss. It was a collision of two worlds—intense, desperate, and absolute. Penelope’s hands rose instinctively, gripping the lapels of his suit jacket as she pulled him closer, surrendering to the intoxicating pull she had been fighting against since the night she walked out of Bellini’s kitchen.
