Chapter 6 - The Memorial GalaIn late September 2026, ten months after the crash, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Chicago was packed to absolute capacity for the inaugural Lily Moreland Pediatric Trauma Gala.

Over five hundred prominent business leaders, supreme court justices, medical specialists, and high-society matriarchs gathered beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers.
Standing at the main presentation podium, wearing a breathtaking floor-length dark emerald silk gown that celebrated my tall, graceful figure, was me.
Around my neck hung a delicate silver locket containing a photograph of Lily’s smiling face and her purple butterfly hair clip.
Beside the stage stood Marcus Vance, my chief legal officer, and Bridget Colton, my managing partner.
I adjusted the microphone, my clear, velvet baritone echoing cleanly through the high-fidelity speakers:
"Ten months ago, my six-year-old daughter asked me seven times if her father was coming home while she lay in an emergency room," I announced to the silent ballroom, my hazel eyes shining with absolute clarity and deep, genuine pride. "And on that night, I swore that no child would ever be left waiting in the dark again."
I held my champagne glass high under the glittering lights.
"To the doctors, nurses, and guardians who protect our little angels: To Lily's Light!"
"To Lily!" the entire room erupted into a warm, unanimous standing ovation, five hundred crystal glasses clinking together under the open sky.

Standing in the shadow of the rear balcony, uninvited and unnoticed by the crowd, stood Damian Moreland.
He wore a dark suit, his face gaunt, holding a small purple butterfly clip in his pocket. He watched me from the dark, tears silently tracking down his face, realizing that the queen he had lost was now an unshakeable, sovereign monarch who would never need his shadow again.
