Chapter 1 - The Echo of an Empty CradleThe rain in Chicago had a way of washing away everything except the truth.

Inside the quiet, sunlit private suite of St. Mary’s Memorial Hospital, I sat on the edge of the mattress wearing a simple wool coat. My hands rested flat over my stomach—the stomach that forty-eight hours ago had held the tiny, flickering pulse of my unborn child. Now, there was only a hollow, aching emptiness that seemed to consume every breath I took.
Standing by the window, his silhouette dark and broad against the gray skyline, was Gabriel Sterling.
Gabriel was the CEO of Sterling Global Logistics and the only man on the East Coast whose power, wealth, and private security apparatus rivaled the Moretti syndicate. More importantly, he was my late father’s former ward—a man who had promised seven years ago to protect me if the world ever proved too dark.
Gabriel turned around slowly, his storm-gray eyes filled with a deep, quiet, and terrifying rage. He held an encrypted satellite phone in his broad hand.
"Vincent’s men are currently circling your downtown apartment, Claire," Gabriel spoke softly, his rich baritone carrying an absolute authority that anchored my shattered soul. "He read the letter. He went to the hospital, but my team erased your admission records and replaced them with a seal of federal confidentiality. He is losing his mind."
I didn't flinch. I looked down at my pale hands, my hazel eyes cold, clear, and weightless.
"Let him lose his mind, Gabriel," I whispered, my raspy voice carrying a quiet power that surprised even myself. "For three years, I was the quiet, compliant wife who waited for him while he built his empire. I swallowed his excuses. I tolerated Sophia. I let him make me feel small. But when he forced that poison past my lips... he murdered the only piece of him I ever loved."
Gabriel walked over, kneeling smoothly on the floor in front of my chair. He took my cold, trembling hands into his broad, calloused palms.
"Where do we go from here, Claire?" Gabriel asked gently.
May you like
I looked straight into his eyes. "We don't run, Gabriel. We dismantle him. Every casino, every shipping line, every corrupt municipal contract Vincent Moretti built on my family's legacy... I am taking it all back."
Gabriel offered a rare, razor-sharp smile. "Then welcome home, Claire. Your throne has been waiting for you."
