Chapter 3 - The War in Courtroom 402Three days later, the news of the primary divorce petition filed by Claire Moretti against Chicago mafia boss Vincent Moretti detonated across the city's financial and legal networks like a nuclear strike.

Inside Courtroom 402 of the Cook County Judicial Center, two hundred journalists, corporate attorneys, and observers packed the wooden pews under tight security detail.

Sitting at the respondent's table was Vincent Moretti.

He wore a dark navy bespoke suit, but he looked hollowed out. His sharp jawline was covered in dark stubble, dark circles carved beneath his gray eyes, his fingers constantly tapping against the mahogany table. Beside him sat three high-priced defense attorneys, frantically reviewing financial disclosure logs.

Sitting at the petitioner's table was Marcus Vance.

And sitting beside Marcus—wearing an immaculate cream wool coat, her dark hair styled in glossy waves, her face pale but radiant, holding a calm, royal posture—was me.

I sat tall in my chair, my back straight, my hands resting comfortably in my lap, my hazel eyes fixed on the judicial bench, refusing to glance even once toward the man sitting ten feet away.

Judge Robert Vance (no relation to Marcus)—a formidable, silver-haired jurist known for his uncompromising discipline—struck his heavy wooden gavel flat against the sound block with a thunderous BOOM.

"Court is in session," Judge Vance declared cleanly. "Petitioner, present your motion for temporary emergency orders."

Marcus Vance stood up smoothly from our table, holding a black leather folder and an encrypted tablet.

"Your Honor," Marcus announced, his baritone carrying clear and crisp through the silent courtroom, "we move for the immediate confirmation of the ex-parte temporary sole legal and physical custody order regarding six-year-old Emma Moretti, along with the continuation of the temporary restraining order against the respondent."

Vincent’s lead attorney jumped up frantically. "Objection, Your Honor! My client is a devoted father and a prominent corporate executive! Mrs. Moretti secretly removed their daughter from the marital residence in the middle of the night without my client’s consent!"

"She removed their daughter, Counsel," Marcus corrected smoothly, turning his tablet toward the judicial bench, "because on the night of October 14th, while six-year-old Emma was suffering from a life-threatening fever of 102.4 degrees, the respondent refused to attend to his daughter, leaving his wife to transport the child to the emergency room alone."

Vincent leaned forward, his hands gripping the edge of the mahogany table, shouting out desperately across the aisle: "Claire! I didn't know she was that sick! You didn't tell me!"

"Order in the court!" Judge Vance barked, slamming his gavel down. "Mr. Moretti, another outburst and I will hold you in summary contempt!"

Marcus pressed a button on his tablet, projecting high-definition emergency room intake records, time-stamped text message logs, and hospital audio recordings onto the court's media wall.

The entire gallery watched in hushed shock as the time-stamps appeared on screen:

11:15 PM: Claire Moretti arrives at St. Jude ER with Emma Moretti (Fever 102.4°F, IV fluids administered).

11:18 PM: Claire sends 3 emergency calls and 6 text messages to Vincent Moretti.

12:30 AM: Vincent Moretti replies: "Sophia’s really shaken up. I’ll be home later."

3:12 AM: Vincent Moretti returns home, refuses entry to master suite, and departs again to Sophia Reynolds’s residence.

The twelve jury members and court officers sat frozen in their seats, their faces turning from professional neutrality into pure, unadulterated disgust as they looked directly at Vincent.

Judge Vance glare down over his wire-rimmed glasses at Vincent, his face carved from ice.

"The evidence of extreme parental negligence and spousal abandonment is overwhelming," Judge Vance ruled cleanly. "The temporary order for sole legal and physical custody of Emma Moretti to Mrs. Claire Moretti is hereby granted permanently pending trial. Mr. Moretti is granted zero visitation rights until he completes a mandatory sixty-day parental fitness evaluation."

BOOM!

The gavel struck the block.

Vincent sat frozen in his leather armchair, his mouth sagging open, his gray eyes staring at me in absolute, horror-stricken ruin as he realized that his daughter had been legally taken from his arms.

I stood up smoothly, buttoned my cream coat, and walked out through the center aisle without giving him a single glance.
