Chapter 1 - The Midnight CallThe voice on the audio recording cut through the quiet nursery with chilling clarity.

I held my phone to my ear with a trembling hand, my body cold despite the warm seventy-two-degree room. The voicemail had come from a burn-line number, but the voice belonged to Laya Crane herself, recorded mid-laugh over the background clinking of champagne flutes and soft jazz at an upscale club downtown.

"Roman, darling," Laya’s light, musical laughter drifted through the speaker, accompanied by Roman’s deep, familiar baritone chuckling in response. "Are you sure your little wife isn't going to throw a fit? It's been hours."

"Aaron doesn't ask questions," Roman's voice answered—cold, detached, and utterly devoid of the warmth he used to hold for me. "She’s where she belongs, taking care of the baby. Tonight is yours, Laya. I've already wired the deed for the Lake Geneva estate to your name."

The recording ended with a sharp digital click.

A heavy, suffocating silence settled over the room.

I stood beside the crib, looking down at my six-day-old daughter, Sophie. My heart didn't shatter; it hardened into absolute, unbreakable stone.

Roman hadn't just gone out for a quick dinner. He had spent months secretly transferring marital assets—assets my late father had helped build when he backed Roman’s rise to power in Milwaukee—into Laya Crane's name while I was undergoing a high-risk pregnancy.

"He thinks I don't ask questions," I whispered into the quiet room, my voice steady, smooth, and devoid of tears. "He thinks I am trapped."

I looked down at the contact number on my screen.

It belonged to Julian Vance—my father’s former chief counsel and a senior Federal Prosecutor who had spent five years waiting for an opening to dismantle the Moretti syndicate. More importantly, Julian was my godfather, a man who had sworn on my father’s deathbed to keep me safe from the world Roman inhabited.

I pressed call.

Julian answered on the second ring. "Aaron? Is everything alright? It’s past ten."

"Julian," I spoke, my tone clear and unshakeable. "I need an emergency extraction for my daughter and myself tonight. I have the secondary ledger keys from my father’s safe, and I am ready to hand over Roman’s complete offshore routing networks."

Silence stretched over the line for two seconds before Julian’s authoritative baritone cut back in. "Give me thirty minutes. My private transport team will be at your rear gate. Where is Roman?"

"He's with Laya Crane," I replied calmly. "And when he comes back, there will be nothing left for him to find."
