Chapter 7 - Sovereign under the Manhattan SkyOne year after the rainy night in Chicago, the grand rooftop terrace of the Hayes Building on Fifth Avenue was illuminated by hundreds of soft, twinkling fairy lights for a warm, clear autumn evening celebration.

A private gathering of eighty close friends, corporate directors, legal staff, and international partners sat at elegant candlelit tables set up along the garden patio overlooking the glowing grid of Central Park below.

I stood near the glass balustrade wearing a breathtaking, floor-floor-length emerald silk dress that caught the moonlight like liquid gold. My dark hair fell in glossy waves over my shoulders, my skin radiant, my posture holding the absolute, unshakeable sovereignty of a queen who had conquered the dark.

Beside me stood Alexander Hayes, wearing an immaculate black tuxedo, holding two glasses of vintage champagne.

He turned his sharp gray eyes onto mine, his broad, warm palm wrapping around my fingers with deep, quiet devotion.

"A toast," Alexander announced, raising his glass toward the assembled guests, his baritone carrying smooth, clear, and warm across the quiet terrace. "To Executive Vice President Claire Bennett! The woman who turned betrayal into an empire of light, truth, and unbroken strength!"

"To Claire!" the entire terrace echoed in a warm, triumphant chorus, eighty glasses clinking together in the golden candlelight.

I raised my glass, taking a slow sip of fine champagne, looking out over the vast, dark, beautiful expanse of Central Park stretching before me into the unbroken horizon.

There were no black Mercedes cars idling in the rain. There were no husbands abandoning dinners for blackmailing mistresses. There were no tears swallowed in cold rooms.

The quiet, second-choice wife was dead forever. The sovereign leader had claimed her throne.

And standing under the vast, unbroken sky, wrapped in the warmth of my own victory, holding Alexander's hand, I knew that my life, my freedom, and my future were finally, beautifully, and forever home.
