Chapter 4 - The Arrival in ManhattanWhile Chicago burned in financial panic, five hundred miles east, the morning sun broke warmly over the soaring glass skyscrapers of Manhattan.

I stepped out of a black sedan outside the grand limestone entrance of the Hayes Enterprises Tower on Fifth Avenue.
I wore a tailored navy silk suit, my dark hair styled in glossy, commanding waves, my posture fluid, tall, and completely unshakeable. On my wrist rested a sleek gold watch, while my left hand—free of Vincent's wedding ring—held a leather briefcase containing my new corporate credentials.
Alexander Hayes—thirty-four, tall, handsome, with sharp gray eyes and an aristocratic smile—stepped through the glass doors to meet me, holding two cups of fresh coffee.
"Welcome to New York, Claire," Alexander smiled warmly, handing me a cup. "You look breathtaking."
"Thank you, Alexander," I smiled back, taking a slow sip of the hot coffee. "It feels good to breathe clean air."
We took the private executive elevator directly to the top floor.
The doors parted to reveal a breathtaking executive suite featuring floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows overlooking Central Park and the Manhattan skyline.
"Your private office is ready, Claire," Alexander revealed, guiding me to a grand mahogany desk set near the window. "And as of eight o'clock this morning, your corporate authority over our East Coast shipping divisions is active."
I walked over to the grand window, looking out over the sunlit trees of Central Park, feeling a deep, weightless peace settle into every corner of my soul.
For five years, I had lived in a cold, shadow-filled mansion in Chicago, sitting by the window waiting for a man who put another woman's blackmail above my dignity.
Today, I was no longer a mafia boss's hidden wife. I was an executive leader standing in my own power.
My private desk phone chimed softly.
I picked it up. "Claire Bennett."
May you like
"Claire..." a voice rasped through the speaker—a voice broken, weeping, and thick with pathetic, desperate pain.
It was Vincent.
