Chapter 1 - The Weight of Seven SecondsThe cold fluorescent lights of Mercy Harbor Medical Center buzzed with a dull, sickening hum.

Inside the private corridor of the cardiac ICU, Victor Romano stood frozen against the nurse's station counter. His bespoke charcoal suit coat was unbuttoned, drenched through the shoulders from the torrential rain he had sprinted through to reach the emergency entrance.

The nurse, a seasoned woman in her fifties named Nurse Margaret whose name tag read Chief Cardiac Coordinator, didn't cower. She looked straight into the dark, bloodshot eyes of the man whose name made federal prosecutors lower their voices.

"Was she trying to reach you, Mr. Romano?" Margaret asked again, her voice steady and unyielding.

"Yes," Victor rasped out, his hands trembling—a sight that his chief lieutenant, Marco, who stood ten paces back with his hand resting near his holster, had never witnessed in fifteen years of service. "I... I was at an executive meeting. I missed the calls."

"You didn't miss them, Mr. Romano," Margaret said cleanly, tapping her digital screen and turning the high-definition audio readout flat against the counter between them. "Mercy Harbor’s emergency dispatch system automatically records incoming patient cellular activity when an emergency penthouse beacon is triggered."

She pressed play.

The silent hallway filled with the sound of my ragged, agonized gasps, echoing off the clinical white walls:

"Please... put my husband on! I CAN'T BREATHE! PLEASE!"

Followed immediately by Selena Vale’s silky, arrogant sneer:

"Listen carefully, sweetheart. Victor doesn't want to talk to you. Stop embarrassing yourself."

And then, the audio wave captured the precise sound of the call being disconnected—followed seven seconds later by the sickening thud of my body collapsing flat onto the freezing marble floor of the penthouse.

Victor’s face drained of every drop of color. The terrifying Don of the Romano Syndicate—a man who had signed death warrants without a blink—staggered backward two full steps, his back hitting the concrete pillar behind him.

"Seven seconds, Mr. Romano," Nurse Margaret revealed softly, every word dropped into his chest like a heavy lead weight. "Your wife suffered an acute coronary artery spasm brought on by severe, prolonged emotional stress and a rare congenital anomaly we had never detected before. If her oxygen level had dropped for another forty seconds while she lay on that floor... she would have been brain-dead before my team arrived."

"Where... where is she?" Victor choked out, his voice cracking into a raw, pathetic thread.

"Dr. Vance is inside Room Eight," Margaret answered. "She is stabilized under medically induced sedation. But if you think your power or your money can fix the damage done to her heart, Mr. Romano... you are gravely mistaken."
