Chapter 6 - The Cárdenas Tower Confrontation

The underground parking garage of the Cárdenas Tower was freezing, damp, and completely deserted when Alessandro’s black SUV slipped past the security gates using Maso’s override codes.
Maso killed the engine, turning off the headlights as we sat in the shadows beneath the massive concrete pillars. In the backseat, Maso checked the slide of his Glock with a sharp, metallic clack.
"The freight elevator leads directly up to the executive sub-level," Maso said, keeping his eyes on the security monitors mounted near the pillar. "Ruggero’s private guards are stationed at the stairwells, but the service lift requires a master biometric clearance. Alessandro, your thumbprint should still override their lock."
"It will," Alessandro replied, opening his door. He turned back, looking directly at me in the dim interior light. His eyes were dark, fierce, and laced with a hesitant vulnerability. "Adriana... if this goes sideways, I need you to take Maso and get out through the loading dock. I mean it."
"Stop talking like a martyr," I snapped, adjusting the strap of my leather tool bag over my shoulder—the same bag I had carried out of the mansion two nights ago. Inside wasn't jewelry repair equipment anymore; it was a complete set of encrypted master bypass tools and high-gain signal jammers I had secretly built during my university years in Zurich before my father forced me into a gilded cage. "You built an empire, Alessandro. But you forgot that empires are only as strong as the foundations holding them up. And I happen to know every structural flaw in yours."
A slow, fierce smile broke across Alessandro’s bruised face. "God help the men inside that boardroom."
We moved through the service core like ghosts. The biometric scanner on the freight elevator flickered green the moment Alessandro pressed his thumb against the glass, and the heavy steel doors slid open with a whisper.
As the elevator rose toward the executive sub-level, the digital display ticked upward: 38... 39... 40.
When the doors parted, we stepped out onto the plush, soundproofed carpeting of the executive corridor.
Two of Ruggero’s personal guards stood outside the massive mahogany double doors of the boardroom, their hands resting on their sidearms. They didn't even have time to draw their weapons. Maso moved with terrifying speed, dropping the first guard with a silent, devastating blow to the windpipe, while Alessandro slammed the second guard’s head against the reinforced drywall with a dull thud.
Both men slumped unconscious to the carpet.
Inside the boardroom, muffled voices echoed through the heavy wood. Ruggero was speaking, his voice carrying the smooth, authoritative cadence of a man reading a death warrant.
"Gentlemen," Ruggero was saying as Alessandro reached out and gripped the brass handles of the double doors. "The vote is unanimous. Alessandro Romano's era of reckless indulgence is over. As of tonight, the syndicate answers to the council."
Alessandro didn't knock.
He threw both doors open with a crash that rattled the crystal chandelier hanging overhead.
All twenty-two capos seated around the massive marble conference table froze in absolute terror. At the head of the table sat eighty-year-old Ruggero Romano, silver-haired and immaculate in a bespoke navy suit, holding a golden gavel in his withered hand.

Ruggero’s eyes widened slightly at the sight of Alessandro standing in the doorway. But then his gaze shifted to the side, landing on me.
A cold, mocking smile spread across Ruggero’s wrinkled face. "Well, well. The runaway bride has returned to watch her husband fall. How poetic."
