Chapter 1 - The Cold Front on the Hallway CarpetThe heavy brass lock clicked into place, but the three slow, deliberate knocks resonated through the thin hotel door like gunshots.

"Open the door, sweetheart. We need to talk."

Dante’s voice carried that calm, terrifying baritone that could make hardened syndicate bosses drop their gaze in submission. The term of endearment, sweetheart, dripped with a dangerous, possessive edge that sent a violent shudder through my spine.

I stood paralyzed in the center of the dimly lit hotel room, my hand clutching my eight-month-swollen belly. My heart hammered against my ribs so hard I thought it would wake the baby kicking frantically beneath my palm.

"Miriam?" I whispered into the phone, pressing the receiver to my ear with trembling fingers. "He’s outside. Right now."

"Listen to me carefully, Evelyn," Miriam Cho’s voice cut through the receiver, sharp and razor-focused. "Do not open that door. I have two private security vehicles five minutes out from your hotel. The moment Dante served those asset freeze notices twenty minutes ago, his primary legal team went into complete damage control. He knows about the ocean house in Maine. He knows about the offshore trust."

A heavy silence stretched across the line before the door handle jiggled softly from the hallway outside.

"Evelyn," Dante called again, his tone dropping an octave into an unyielding, lethal quiet. "I know you’re holding your phone. I know Miriam is on the line. Hang up, unlock the door, and let me see my child."

"Go away, Dante," I choked out, forcing my voice to sound far braver than the trembling girl terrified inside the room. "The wedding ring is on your nightstand beside your watch. I am not your wife anymore."

A soft, dark chuckle echoed through the door panel—a sound that sent an icy chill straight down my spine.

"You think a piece of platinum makes you my wife, Evelyn?" Dante murmured through the wood. "You carry the Moretti heir. You wear my name. You don't get to check into a cheap downtown hotel and decide our marriage is over because of a mistake."

"A mistake?!" A sudden, white-hot surge of rage broke through my fear, scorching away my paralysis. I stepped closer to the door, my knuckles white as I gripped the frame. "You brought Vivian Cross into our marital bedroom! You had her sitting on our bed while I was carrying your child! You didn't make a mistake, Dante—you assumed I was too weak, too broken, and too terrified of your reputation to walk away!"

Silence fell over the hallway.

For three endless seconds, the only sound was the hum of the hotel air conditioner and the steady, heavy rain hammering against the glass window behind me.

"Open the door, Evelyn," Dante whispered, his tone stripped of all charm, leaving behind the raw, terrifying authority of the most feared mob boss in Chicago. "Or I will take this door off its hinges, and everyone on this floor will watch me carry you back to my car."

"He won't do it, Evelyn," Miriam’s voice barked over the phone speaker. "The hotel is owned by the Valenti family—Dante’s primary political allies. If he causes a public scene in their establishment, the Commission will call an emergency sit-down before morning. Hold your ground. My security detail is pulling into the garage right now."

I took a slow, deep breath, pressing my palm tighter against my kicking baby.

"I'm not opening the door, Dante," I said, every word dropping like a stone into the quiet hallway. "And if you touch that frame, I will call the federal marshals who have been reviewing your secondary real estate ledgers for the past four months."

The silence outside the door became absolute.

I held my breath, watching the brass deadbolt through the peephole. A long shadow blocked the yellow hall light before slowly, deliberately stepping backward.

"Four months, Evelyn?" Dante’s voice came one last time, smooth, cold, and echoing with an ominous promise as his footsteps retreated down the carpeted hallway. "You've been planning this for four months? Enjoy your night, sweetheart. Because by sunrise, every lawyer, bank, and safehouse you think you own will belong to me."
