Chapter 6 - Reckoning

Four men in dark federal suits and crisp white shirts strode into the salon with an aura of unyielding authority. At their front walked Special Agent Marcus Vance—no relation to the ranch family—flanked by local police officers and Mateo Silva, Mariana’s attorney, who carried a heavy aluminum briefcase.
The entire room erupted into a cacophony of gasps and outraged shouts.
"What is the meaning of this?!" Dona Letícia stood up so fast her chair tipped backward, crashing loudly against the hardwood floor. "Who invited these people?! Rodrigo, throw them out!"
Special Agent Vance ignored her completely, walking straight up to the mahogany table. He pulled a folded legal document from his breast pocket and snapped it open.
"Rodrigo De la Vega-Vance? Otaviano Vance?" the agent called out, his voice sharp as a razor.
Rodrigo stepped back, his face instantly draining of all color until he looked like a corpse. "This... this is a mistake. I am a registered stakeholder of—"
"You are under federal arrest for corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, identity theft, and the systematic falsification of agricultural export records," Agent Vance stated clearly, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Mr. Otaviano Vance, you are also named in the federal indictment. Please place your hands behind your back."
Chaos exploded in the salon. Fernanda shrieked, dropping her phone as she rushed toward her father. "Dad! Make them stop! What is happening?!"
Señor Otaviano slumped into his chair, covering his face with his trembling hands as the officers moved in to secure him.
Rodrigo lunged forward in a blind panic, his eyes wide with animal terror, pointing a shaking finger directly at Mariana. "She did this! She set us up! She forged those documents herself! She’s an unstable lunatic!"
Mariana remained seated, her expression entirely serene. She picked up her glass of ice water, took a slow sip, and set it back down.
"Forgery, Rodrigo?" Mariana asked quietly, looking up at him with pity. "Is that why you hired private hackers to wipe the server logs? Is that why you thought killing an innocent animal would intimidate me into silence?"
She turned her gaze toward Agent Vance. "Officer, if you check the encrypted flash drive I submitted to your office yesterday morning, you’ll find audio recordings of Mr. Vance explicitly admitting to the falsification of the estate deeds, alongside complete financial ledgers proving the diversion of three million dollars in federal agricultural subsidies into private offshore accounts."
Agent Vance nodded crisply. "We have mirror copies of all files, Mrs. Vance. The asset seizure warrants have already been executed across all De la Vega-Vance corporate holdings. Every bank account, vehicle, and property deed linked to this syndicate is now under federal receivership."

Rodrigo stared at his wife, the realization of his total, catastrophic defeat finally crushing the breath out of his lungs. The handcuffs clicked shut around his wrists with a cold, metallic snap.
As federal agents escorted Rodrigo and Otaviano out through the double doors past the stunned crowd of local elites, Dona Letícia collapsed into her chair, weeping hysterically, while Fernanda stood frozen in absolute disbelief, watching her family’s multi-million-dollar empire dissolve into ash before her eyes.
