Chapter 2 - The Fall of Vale EnterprisesThe silence that followed my father’s decree was shattered by the sharp, persistent vibration of Adrian’s phone against the marble floor where it had slipped from his pocket.

Then another phone rang.

Then the tablet on the side table chimed in rapid, overlapping alerts—a chaotic, digital chorus of absolute destruction.

Adrian dropped to his knees, his hands shaking so violently he nearly dropped his phone as he swiped the screen open. His face turned from pale to a sickening, translucent gray.

"H-hello?" Adrian stammered into the receiver.

"Adrian! What the hell is going on?!" his Chief Financial Officer’s voice roared through the speaker, so loud that every person in the foyer could hear every word. "JP Morgan just froze our primary operational payroll accounts! The SEC served six federal search warrants on our Midtown headquarters four minutes ago! They have our Grand Cayman ledger, Adrian! They have the forged invoices for Vanessa's consulting firm!"

Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat. He looked up at me, his eyes wide with a horrific, wide-eyed realization. "No... no, that’s impossible... those files were stored on an encrypted, air-gapped server in my private office—"

"I copied that server three weeks ago while you were in Miami with Vanessa, Adrian," I said, my voice deadpan, smooth, and ringing with absolute clarity as I leaned against my father’s arm. "I used the master administrative key your late father gave me before he passed away."

"You..." Adrian rasped, his eyes filling with raw, unadulterated terror. "You set me up..."

"I didn't set you up, Adrian," I corrected softly, stepping forward until the hem of my father's cashmere coat brushed against his trembling hands. "You built a tower out of fraud, abuse, and arrogance. I simply pulled the cloth away so the world could see what you really were."

Vanessa let out a sharp, high-pitched shriek of panic as her own phone chimed with an emergency notification from her personal bank.

"My account!" Vanessa screamed, staring at her screen with frantic, wide eyes. "My four million dollars in the Bahamas! It’s gone! The bank says the funds were seized under a international judicial freeze order!"

She turned on Adrian like a feral animal, her manicured nails digging into his shoulders as she shook him violently. "You promised me I was safe! You said your wife was a penniless nobody who would sign whatever divorce papers we put in front of her! You ruined my life!"

"Get off me, you bitch!" Adrian roared, shoving Vanessa backward onto the velvet sofa, his mask of smooth, aristocratic charm completely shattered into ugly, pathetic rage.

My father took a single step toward them, his broad frame cutting off the light from the chandelier. The two tactical operators behind him stepped forward, their heavy boots crunching against the shattered glass on the floor.

"Marcus," my father commanded, addressing the lead operator. "Take Miss Cole into custody under the private international extradition warrant issued by the Swiss Federal Prosecutor this morning. She will answer for the wire fraud charges in Zurich by sunset tomorrow."

"No! Please! Adrian, help me!" Vanessa shrieked as two operators hoisted her off the sofa, pinning her arms behind her back with swift, mechanical efficiency, dragging her kicking and screaming out through the shattered entrance toward the waiting armored vehicles.

Adrian didn't move a muscle to help her. He sat on the blood-stained marble, staring up at my father and me, weeping pathetically, his hands clutching the knees of his ruined suit trousers.

"Evelyn..." Adrian whimpered, reaching out a hand toward my shoes, his voice cracking into a desperate, breaking sob. "Evelyn, my love... please... I made a mistake! A terrible, stupid mistake! Vanessa manipulated me! She fed me lies about you! She made me think you didn't respect me!"

I looked down at the man who had ordered me to kneel beneath the chandelier, the man who had struck me two hundred times while his mistress corrected his count.

May you like

I felt no satisfaction. I felt no hatred. I felt only a profound, weightless peace as eighteen months of suffocating fear vanished into the cold night air.

"My name is Evelyn Sterling, Adrian," I whispered softly. "And you are going to spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary realizing exactly who you tried to destroy."
