Chapter 3 - The Asset FreezeBy 9:00 AM the following morning, the news of Daniel Vance’s arrest had detonated across the financial and legal networks of the city like a high-yield warhead.

Front-page headlines splashed across every major news portal: REAL ESTATE TYCOON DANIEL VANCE AND ASSISTANT ARRESTED IN ATTEMPTED POISONING OF FORMER PROSECUTOR WIFE.

Inside the sleek, sunlit top-floor executive conference room of Vance Development Group, the atmosphere was thick with chaotic, unadulterated panic. Eight senior board members, four corporate defense attorneys, and the chief financial officer were huddled around a long mahogany table, shouting frantically into their phones.

The heavy double glass doors of the suite were pushed open.

I stepped into the room.

I wore an immaculate, charcoal-gray suit, my leather heels clicking with sharp, rhythmic precision against the polished marble floorboards. Flanking me was Arthur Vance—my father’s former senior partner and the most feared forensic asset-recovery attorney in the state—along with two uniformed county sheriffs.

The shouting in the room died instantly. Every executive turned, their faces draining of color as they stared at me.

“Claire...?” the Chief Financial Officer, Harold, stammered out, backing away from his seat. “What... what is the meaning of this? This is a private executive board meeting!”

Arthur Vance stepped forward, pulling a thick, court-sealed leather binder from his briefcase and dropping it flat onto the center of the mahogany table with a deafening THUD.

“Good morning, gentlemen,” Arthur announced, his baritone echoing clearly through the silent room. “I am Arthur Vance, lead counsel for Mrs. Claire Vance. As of seven-thirty this morning, the Chancery Court has issued an emergency ex-parte injunction freezing all corporate and personal assets associated with Daniel Vance.”

Harold’s jaw sagged open in total shock. “Freezing the assets?! You can't freeze the operating accounts! We have a forty-million-dollar payroll clearance at noon!”

“Under State Civil Forfeiture Statute Section 802,” I spoke up, my voice calm, precise, and razor-sharp, “any corporate entity utilized to facilitate, hide, or fund criminal racketeering and attempted homicide is subject to immediate judicial restraint.”

I walked slowly to the head of the table—the executive chair where Daniel had sat for seven years, pretending to build an empire—and set my hands flat against the polished wood.

“Over the last seventy-two hours,” I continued, looking straight into the eyes of the trembling executives, “my forensic team audited the secondary ledger accounts Daniel created under the shell company V-Reed Logistics. He embezzled fourteen million dollars from this firm's primary trust to fund his second apartment, Vanessa’s offshore accounts, and the purchase of the chemical compounds used last night.”

The executives gasped, turning their heads in horror to stare at each other.

“Daniel Vance is currently being held without bail at the County Correctional Facility,” I stated deadpan. “His corporate voting proxies have been permanently revoked under Section 14 of your operating charter. And as the primary sixty-percent equity holder of the Vance Trust... I am assuming the role of Interim Chief Executive Officer effective immediately.”

Harold stumbled back into his chair, his hands shaking violently as he looked at me—realizing in a single fraction of a second that the quiet, obedient wife Daniel had bragged about controlling was actually an apex predator who had just consumed his entire enterprise.

“Are there any questions?” I asked smoothly.

Not a single soul in the room dared to breathe.
