Chapter 5 - The Unraveling
Within forty-eight hours of the boardroom confrontation, Gregory Caldwell’s carefully constructed reality disintegrated into dust.
The board of directors at Sterling & Vance placed him on immediate administrative leave pending the internal audit of his expense accounts. When investigators discovered that he had billed personal weekend getaways with Simone to corporate client development funds, the "harmless flirtation" instantly transformed into federal wire fraud and gross fiduciary misconduct.
Simone, upon discovering that Gregory was not only broke but facing potential criminal charges and total asset forfeiture, blocked his number, packed her apartment, and moved back to Portland within three days. The grand future they had planned over crystal glasses of wine evaporated the moment there was no corporate credit card left to pay for it.
On Friday afternoon, Gregory arrived at the Medina house to collect his remaining personal belongings under the supervision of a county sheriff’s deputy.
I sat on the covered back patio, wrapped in a cashmere cardigan, watching the autumn leaves drift across the lawn. Through the glass sliding doors, I watched him carry cardboard boxes out to his rented sedan—a far cry from the German luxury sports car he had proudly parked in the driveway just a week earlier.
When he finished loading the trunk, he walked slowly around to the back patio, standing on the other side of the glass door. He looked exhausted, older, and smaller than the man who had sat across from me in the downtown restaurant.
He didn't knock. He simply stared at me through the glass, his lips moving silently before he turned away, got into the sedan, and drove down the driveway without looking back.
I didn't feel triumph, nor did I feel sadness. I felt only a profound, crystalline stillness.
My phone buzzed on the patio table. It was a message from Arthur Sterling:

The temporary restraining order is in effect, and the preliminary property settlement has been filed. The house, the Meridian accounts, and the commercial real estate holdings are fully protected under your sole name. Whenever you’re ready to celebrate, let me know.
I smiled, picked up my phone, and replied: Thank you, Arthur. Let’s celebrate by finalizing the re-branding of Meridian Design.
