Chapter 2 - The Audit of the Lost DynastyBy 2:00 AM, the top-floor executive command suite at The Chicago Financial Center was operating under an impenetrable, non-negotiable tactical lockdown.

Outside the private elevator banks, ten elite security operators in dark charcoal suits guarded every corridor. Inside, sitting in a high-backed velvet armchair, wearing a crisp dark green silk suit, was me.
Across the broad black granite conference table sat Senior Corporate Prosecutor Bridget Colton, an independent legal strategist who had managed my grandfather's estate for two decades, alongside Lieutenant Colonel Marcus Vance, head of Vance Security.
Bridget Colton opened three heavy, red-sealed leather binders, sliding digital ledgers and wiretap transcripts flat onto the table toward me:
"Claire," Bridget spoke crisp and fast, her sharp blue eyes holding surgical professional fury. "The forensic audit into Grant Hawthorne, Patricia Hawthorne, and Hawthorne Kitchens Inc. is complete."
I leaned over the granite table, my hands planted flat against the polished surface, my dark hazel eyes burning with an unshakeable, diamond-hard resolve. "Explain it, Bridget."
Bridget tapped the digital screens:
THE EIGHT-MILLION-DOLLAR EMBEZZLEMENT: Proof that Grant Hawthorne systematically diverted $8 million from Hawthorne Kitchens’ commercial equipment trust over three years into private accounts held jointly by his mother, Patricia, and his mistress, Vanessa Sterling.
THE UNPAID SUPPLIER DEBTS: Certified notices showing Grant defaulted on $3.2 million in stainless steel supply lines from South Chicago foundries, attempting to mask the shortfall by forging corporate credit extensions under my maiden name.
THE SOVEREIGN TRUST: Certified corporate deeds confirming Claire Hawthorne as sole sixty percent equity chairwoman, holding absolute legal authority to liquidate, restructure, or foreclose on all operational assets of Hawthorne Kitchens Inc.
My breath hitched slightly, then settled into a cold, lethal calm.
"He stole eight million dollars from the company I saved," I rasped out, every word falling like an iron block into the silent room. "He gave my money to his mother and his mistress while screaming at me over a six-hundred-dollar check for my father's teeth."
Marcus Vance stepped forward, holding an encrypted satellite tablet. "Chairwoman Hawthorne, Grant has scheduled an emergency press conference and board dinner for 10:00 AM tomorrow at the Drake Hotel. He intends to announce a $15 million public expansion—using your grandfather's trust assets as pledged security without your knowledge."

I slowly stood up from my chair, adjusting the cuffs of my tailored emerald jacket.
"He wants to showcase his business, Marcus," I said, my voice dipping into a low, terrifying register of absolute authority. "Tomorrow morning... we give him the show of his life."
