Chapter 2 - The Audit of a Monster

The silence in the bedroom grew so heavy that the hum of the apartment's outdated refrigerator sounded like a chainsaw. Linda backed up until her spine hit the hallway wall, her breathing turning shallow and frantic.

"You... you can't do this!" Linda shrilled, trying to summon the haughty superiority she usually used to demean Emily. "We are respectable people! My son is a junior partner at a wealth management firm! We'll call the police! We'll report you for trespassing and intimidation!"

Vincent slowly walked out of the bedroom, his heavy leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. He didn't look at Linda; his obsidian eyes were fixed entirely on Ryan, who looked as though he might faint right there on the rug.

"The police," Vincent murmured, tasting the word as if it were something foul. "You want to call the men who spent twenty years trying to find a reason to lock me away? Go ahead, Ryan. Pick up the phone. Tell them Vincent Moretti is standing in your living room. Let's see how fast they answer, and let's see what they find when they run a forensic audit on your personal finances."

Ryan’s face drained of every last drop of color. He staggered backward, catching himself against the back of the sofa. "What... what are you talking about?"

Sal stepped forward, sliding a thick manila folder out from beneath his suit jacket and tossing it onto the glass coffee table. The file landed with a heavy, ominous slap.

"You've been skimming client accounts for eighteen months to fund your gambling debts at the underground club on Wabash," Sal recited smoothly, reading from memory. "You registered a shell company under your mother’s maiden name to hide thirty thousand dollars a month in embezzlement. And worse than that, Ryan... you thought because Emily was isolated, because her father was 'retired,' you could treat her like your personal punching bag."

Ryan’s mouth opened and closed like a fish out of water. "That's—that's corporate espionage! You illegally hacked—"

"I didn't hack anything," Vincent said quietly, stepping close enough that Ryan could smell the faint scent of cedar and old tobacco on his wool coat. "Good men still remember how to look at books. And good fathers always check on their daughters, even when those daughters try to protect them with lies."

Linda lunged forward, her face twisted in venom. "She deserved it! She sat around all day doing nothing while my son worked himself to the bone! She's weak, she's useless, and she couldn't even keep her mouth shut—"

Sal moved with terrifying speed. Without drawing a weapon, he stepped into Linda's path, planting a massive hand against the wall beside her head. The sheer physical presence of the enforcer made Linda squeak in sheer, unadulterated terror, cutting her tirade off mid-sentence.

"Shut your mouth, lady," Sal whispered, his voice like grinding stones. "You've talked your last lie today."

Vincent turned his back on them, walking toward the bedroom door. "Sal. Get my daughter, her things, and the medical records. We are going home."
