Chapter 3 - The Audit of the EmpireGrant’s face transformed from arrogant fury to complete, horror-stricken confusion as his eyes scanned down the legal typeface on page four.

"Class-A... Preferred... Equity...?" Grant stammered, his baritone cracking into a high, pathetic squeak. "What... what is this?! I built Vance Precision! I am the Don of that company!"
"You built that company on my father's six hundred thousand dollars, Grant," I stated, my voice smooth as silk and cold as Arctic ice. "And when you drafted the charter in 2018, you gave me absolute veto power over all equity transfers. The twenty-five percent 'Gifting Covenant' you signed for Owen three months ago was illegal, unauthorized, and constitutes corporate fraud."
Judith rushed forward, grabbing Grant’s arm, her eyes wide with rising panic. "Grant! What is she talking about?! What does she mean about Owen’s trust?!"
"Shut up, Mom!" Grant snapped, sweat suddenly beading along his forehead as he flipped frantically through the pages. "Claire... this is a mistake! My lawyer set this up as a standard investment structure! You can't just demand 1.8 million dollars! The company doesn't have 1.8 million in liquid cash reserves!"
"Then you have thirty days to liquidate your commercial fleet, sell your personal assets, or surrender your Class-B shares to my estate trust," I replied flatly.
"You can't do this to your family!" Judith shrieked, pointing a shaking, manicured finger at my face. "Owen is your nephew! That twenty-five percent was supposed to pay for his private academy tuition and his college trust! Nathan died six years ago! Grant promised his late brother that Owen would carry the Vance family name into the business!"
I turned my eyes slowly onto Judith.
"Nathan didn't die six years ago, Judith," I said cleanly.
Every sound in the cul-de-sac seemed to die instantly.
Grant froze. Judith’s mouth opened and closed like a dying fish, the blood completely draining from her face.
"What... what did you just say?" Grant whispered, taking a slow step back.
"I spent yesterday afternoon with a forensic investigator, Grant," I revealed, pulling a second thick document binder from my bag, holding it so they could see the red official seal of the Florida Department of Corrections. "Nathan didn't die in an overseas construction accident six years ago. He is currently serving an eight-year sentence in a federal penitentiary in Pensacola for wire fraud and embezzlement."
Judith let out a high-pitched, choked shriek, clutching her chest as she stumbled backward against the silver crossover.
"And Melissa hasn't been a grieving widow," I continued, every word dropped like an iron hammer onto their heads. "She has been receiving forty thousand dollars a year out of Vance Precision’s operating accounts—money Grant categorized as 'equipment maintenance'—to pay for Nathan's defense appeals and maintain her luxury home in Mount Pleasant."

Grant stood paralyzed on his driveway, the papers shaking violently in his hands, his arrogant filter completely shattered into pathetic, ruined dust.
"You built an empire of lies, Grant," I promised, taking two steps toward my car. "And by the time my forensic team finishes auditing your books... you won't even have enough money left to buy Owen a fourteen-dollar breakfast."
